Before the world knew me as a rock god, I was just the angry boy who stole her heart.

She was a good girl.

The forbidden fruit I wasn’t meant to taste.

Our stars were crossed, and fate had doomed us from the start.

She was promised to someone else.

I had her secret smiles.

Moments stolen in dark corners.

But I couldn’t have her future.

Destiny tore us apart, and all that remained was the ghost of her memory.

When she died, I did too.

But when I catch a glimpse of her five years later, alive and well, that love turns to hate as the bitter truth emerges.

She left me.

She lied.

And now, I’m going to make her pay.

“All I ever had to offer her was me.”

Guitar_Playing

Phew. This was one behemoth of a romance story that’ll tear you apart only to put you back together again. It’s definitely not for the faint-hearted. It’s a contemporary romance but with strong dark themes included.

This book contains several romance sub-genres and tropes, as well as sensitive content that some readers may find triggering. Madden and Bianca’s story consists of the following:

  • Rockstar Romance
  • First Love
  • Star-Crossed Lovers
  • Ex-Military
  • Forbidden Romance
  • Secret Romance
  • Love Triangle
  • Friends-to-Lovers
  • Love-to-Hate-to-Love
  • MC Romance

Please note the dark themes are graphic. It deals with death, strong violence, blackmail, physical and mental abuse, and sexual assault. As well as horrific events resulting in psychological and emotional trauma, substance abuse, depression, and overall PTSD. It’s intended for readers 18+ only.

It’s a journey full of unbreakable bonds and honest friendships, but also brings about what seems like an endless amount of hopelessness. Be prepared for a lot of heaviness. Right from the very beginning you’re pulled into a sombre backdrop that sets the precedents of the entire book’s atmosphere.

TaylorKinney_Drinking

Without giving away the storyline, Madden and Bianca’s lives are wrapped in half-truths, mystery, and constant roadblocks. Somebody upstairs certainly didn’t want them together. Although they do get their HEA, it was undoubtedly an uphill battle to get to their happiness. It was an emotional rollercoaster that evoked a mixture of heartbreak, frustration, and eventually contentment.

Zavarelli created two very complex MCs in a twisted character-driven narrative. It takes place in both the past and present day and interchanges chapter to chapter. To be honest, it felt like I was reading two books simultaneously— one the prequel, the other the main story. In my opinion, both timelines had their own pacing which disrupted the overall flow. The backstory was slower-paced and I felt it dragged somewhat in the middle of the story before it picked back up towards the end. The chapters with the present day were definitely my favourite parts of the book to read. They were faster-paced and had a lot of the interactions and developments that had me completely hooked.

Madden and Bianca are stuck in an infinite loop of push-and-pull and unresolved issues. On one hand it was frustrating to see the repetitiveness, but on the other, it was relatable seeing the difficulties they went through individually and with each other. On some level, I resonated with certain issues and easily sympathised with their situation.

I especially gravitated towards Madden and his painful journey of finding his place in the world and the love he deserved. With his raw character, vulnerability, fundamental strength, and most importantly his unwavering belief, he’s without a doubt my favourite MMC from this series.

“I don’t know how to love someone I can’t have.”

I like the initial premise. It’s one of my favourite elements but can be a bit of rare find, so discovering Zavarelli’s newest novel revolved around it had me excited to say the least. The mystery surrounding Bianca and needing to uncover the truth was ultimately what made this a page-turner. With the addition of lovable secondary characters that stole my attention from time to time added a level of dimension and injected genuine positivity to a mostly grim storytelling.

It’s a standalone within the Sin City Salvation series with character crossovers from the previous books. I recommend reading them first before starting this one to understand the relationships amongst the characters.

All in all, this third and final book was a beautiful conclusion to the series. It had a little bit of everything from the romantic elements, to the comradery and diverse familial dynamics, to the action and suspense. It’s a story of growth, loyalty, and loss.

I always find Zavarelli’s writing whilst intricate still effortless to follow, and this book was no different. It’s a real survival, “love conquers all” love story that’s so hearty and gut-wrenching, it’ll leave you feeling like you’ve been put through the wringer right alongside Madden and Bianca. And after having read their story, their HEA was well and truly deserving.

It has vivid world-building, complex characters, and multiple developing storylines. If you’re an avid fan of Zavarelli, you won’t want to miss out on reading this. Any dark and contemporary romance readers who enjoy any of the following sub-genres and tropes I mentioned should give this one a try. Just have tissues on hand.

He was the mysterious dark knight always swooping in to save me when I needed it most.

I was the troubled girl with scars and a bleeding heart.

He was the gifted guitarist destined for big things.

I was the small-town girl battling her demons.

He was my earth….always keeping me grounded.

And I was his sky…always just out of his reach.

Our love was everything I wished for.

Until I destroyed it.

I never thought I’d see Memphis Payne again after I broke his heart, but the stars had other plans.

Because here he is…needing me to clean up his mess this time.

Only problem is…

Doing so will break both our hearts.

They say only the strongest love can survive an apocalypse.

That if two people are meant to be, they’ll find their way back to each other.

I hope they’re right.

“The people you trust are the ones who hurt you the most.”

TVD_Caroline_Crying

Jade has written another fleshed-out, thought-provoking story that will undoubtedly stay with me. The follow-up story to The Words centres around Memphis, Skylar, and Josh, as we delve into each of their backstories in this first book from the Star-Crossed Lovers Duet.

The strongest and most drawn-out emotion that The Choice surprisingly evoked out of me was utter frustration. But trust me, that’s a good thing—I was wholly absorbed. This trio of characters each played a role in adding complexity and dimension to the storyline that not only grabbed my attention, but had me invested in seeing how their warped relationships would unfold.

Memphis is Memphis, and for me, his character has never wavered. I immediately took a liking to him in The Words, and after reading this book, it only reiterated how easily he drew me in. As much as I adored Skylar in The Words, I wasn’t her biggest fan in this book, but I’m not worried as I know her character growth will develop further, and I, for one am looking forward to seeing it in the second half of this duet. Although Josh played a minor role in The Words, his character left quite an impression that was magnified tenfold in this one. Nothing could have prepared me for what this book entailed.

  • New Adult romance
  • Rock star romance
  • Next-door neighbours
  • Love triangle
  • Star-crossed lovers
  • Small-town romance

The storytelling is very character-driven and had me completely on edge. It’s twisted, erratic, and emotionally-charged through and through. While I would happily recommend it to fellow romance readers, it’s not for the faint-hearted. There are sensitive subject matters within that some readers may find triggering or disturbing to read about. Please note it’s graphic and contains domestic violence, child abuse, sexual assault, drug and substance abuse. These characters are traumatized, troubled, and the experiences they’ve had to endure resulted in psychological scarring and PTSD. It’s intended for readers 18+ only.

This is an interconnected standalone. You don’t have to read The Words beforehand but I highly advise you do read it before The Consequence. This half of the duet is their history. The Words takes you to their present (only their story is secondary), but The Consequence will pick up where The Words ended, and where their story will in evidently conclude.

These characters have been put into some pretty dicey situations that no one should have to bear. I wish I could say I completely understood or sympathise with all of their actions and life-altering choices but unfortunately that wasn’t the case. Whilst some decisions were understandably made out of sheer desperation, other choices were fairly questionable. Like I said earlier, it’s thought-provoking and there’s a lot to absorb. It broaches on one’s moral compass, motivations, and ultimately questions one’s character. And I thoroughly enjoyed every minute getting to divulge into these characters’ innermost psyche.

“It’s wrong. It’s reckless. It’s perfect.”

I couldn’t have said it better than the quote above. I love Jade’s writing. It’s effortless to follow, pushes against the boundaries, and swallows you whole from the very beginning. It has a way of transporting you into the world that’s been so intricately created, and the world-building here is phenomenal. The overall atmosphere envelops you. Although I couldn’t relate to some of their experiences, I found Memphis and Skylar to be genuine, relatable characters I easily connected with—especially Memphis with his personality type.

The alternating POVs between Memphis and Skylar is what sets their small-town, young love story apart from other small-town romances I’ve read in the past. Their internal monologue, along with their heart-palpitating interactions is everything! I was left reeling at the events that took place, and by the time this book concluded, I was left just a smidge heartbroken.

The Choice is a contemporary star-crossed lovers romance story that packs one helluva punch! I’ll be twiddling my thumbs until I can get my hands on The Consequence because the ending in this book had my jaw dropping. I’m so glad Jade decided to return to this world and expanded it. It’s beautiful, soulful, and makes you wish only good things for these characters. This is definitely one of my favourite reads of year.

Body Kiss Love GIF - Body Kiss Love Couple - Discover & Share GIFs

“I’m also meant to love you.”

Would you take a leap of faith for the unknown? Would you sacrifice one love for another?

This story just about broke my heart. As much as I thought I was coming into it slightly prepared for some heartbreak, it was nowhere near enough what with the emotional onslaught that smacked me page after page. Reilly really pulled out the big guns with this one. I couldn’t stop reading even if I needed to. This may have been one of Reilly’s longer length novels, but it definitely didn’t read like one with the constant developments, nail-biting suspense, and jaw-dropping plot twists.

By Fate I Conquer is reminiscent of Bound by Honor and Twisted Pride combined. It brought about the gritty atmosphere, complexity, and well-developed narrative that initially had me falling in love with the Born In Blood Mafia Chronicles and The Camorra Chronicles alike, (and more specifically with my favourite Made Men of this world). It was the book I was so hoping and wishing Sins Of The Fathers had been from the get-go, but nevertheless Amo and Greta’s story was well worth the wait, and in my opinion breathe new life into the series.

Seeing the relationships, contrast and dynamics between certain characters was intriguing to say the least and in some cases devilishly amusing, leaving me with giddy excitement to see what Reilly has in store for future books.

I’ve seen how this world Reilly has created has divided readers in regards to the actions her characters have taken. I personally, had no issues with the events that transpired in both Remo (Twisted Pride) and Luca’s (Bound By Blood) books and the roads taken, and I didn’t have issues with Amo’s either. Reilly’s characters are flawed and complex. This story undoubtedly struggles with morality and you’re going to have to leave your moral compass at the door if there’s any chance of liking (and more importantly accepting) Amo and Greta’s story.

Having said that, in my opinion trigger warnings should be openly shared whether it contains spoilers or not. It would take a lot for me to be triggered by dark and/or sensitive content from a book I’m reading, but if I had any, I’d like to know ahead of time if a book I was considering reading had any that I might be opposed to. Out of respect for Reilly’s wishes I’m not sharing specific TW, but I will say this: By Fate I Conquer is graphic, probably more graphic, more detailed than any of Reilly’s past mafia books. The violence is disturbing, brutal, and can be traumatic for some readers. There’s a lot to unpack with this book, the violence is just one of many. Take caution if you’re squeamish.

This story is undoubtedly debatable and thought-provoking. It brings up real-life issues. I applaud Reilly for trying to add diversity to her characters and to their circumstances, however I’m on the fence about one particular turn of events. I initially liked the idea and thought it was a refreshing change of direction, but sadly it was short-lived, as Reilly reverted back to a predictable route that majority of her fanbase no doubt are favourably expecting.

In spite of everything, this book is hefty. I thoroughly enjoyed the backstories and the constant interactions amongst the cast of characters. There are bonds that I was all-in for and hope to see more of in upcoming books. The vast relationships presented and series crossovers alone made this an outstanding story to read through. Star-crossed lovers is a premise I’ll never tire of reading, and this was very much a modern-day Romeo & Juliet narrative. Amo and Greta have an interesting contrast of personalities that suited one another and I was immediately invested in seeing how things would progress. The saying “the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree” has never been truer than with the Falcones and the Vitiellos, and they certainly know how to evoke emotion out of you. The ratio of romance to dark mafia elements was well-balanced and honestly kept me on the edge of seat. The budding romance is swoon-worthy with tons of eroticism thrown in.

The world-building expanded tenfold with this book through the epic cast of characters that appeared. If you’re not familiar with the pre-existing characters from Reilly’s extensive mafia world, then you’ll probably feel overwhelmed by all the relationships and connections involved. I recommend checking out Reilly’s backlist of books to ensure you’re up-to-date (preferably before starting this one).

Overall, it’s well-paced storytelling and I enjoyed seeing it told from multiple POVs. Whilst I found particular scenes predictable, there were still plenty of surprises throughout that made it unputdownable. I only wish certain events that took place weren’t mentioned in passing. I’m curious to know all the gory details. But I’m in happy contentment that this story gave a sense of new beginnings and in some instances a sense of closure too. Although I still can’t wrap my mind around my favourite OG characters having gotten older, I’m chuffed to see their fiery dispositions are still very much alive and kicking. 🤭😜

Amo and Greta have come a long way from their days as littlies. Despite their dark and gritty surroundings, I have second-hand pride at seeing how well they’ve both turned out. I will definitely be reading this one time and time again, and I highly recommend fans of dark mafia romance books add it to their TBR!

Scribbler Of Dreams by Mary E. Pearson

— BLURB —

Romeo and Juliet had the right idea. About dating the enemy that is. They were true to their hearts.

Kaitlin Malone know what it’s like to date the enemy. She was raised to hate the Crutchfields, and absolutely does – until she meets Bram Crutchfield. It turns out he’s a great guy – one she could talk to, share things with…even love. But when Kaitlin gives her heart to Bram, her world spins out of control. Soon the Crutchfields are her friends and she’s a traitor to her own family.

To make things worse ,Bram was raised to hate the Malones, especially Kaitlin’s father – who murdered Bram’s dad. Bram doesn’t know Kaitlin is a Malone. If he did he would hate her, too.

What’s a star-crossed lover to do?

•••

— MY REVIEW —

I read Scribbler of Dreams around this time last year! I know, I know.. this review is long overdue! Good thing it’s a quick read, I was able to reread it again before writing this blog post. 😛

Scribbler of Dreams CoverThis book is inspired by Romeo and Juliet. The whole family vs family deal definitely plays a big backdrop to the story between “star-crossed” lovers Kaitlin and Bram.

Just like Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, I found their families to be selfish, annoying jerks who have the saddest reasons as to why they hate one another. I lost count of how many times I either rolled my eyes, sighed or just wanted to speed read to the parts that involved only Kaitlin and Bram. Hehehe.

I don’t know how I feel about Kaitlin discovering who Bram’s family was from early on and keeping it to herself. But then again we’re talking about young love here, and she is a teenage girl who’s dealing with her first love and not wanting to lose it… so… meh. I’ll let this one slide. But the minute I got to the part where she finds out and decides to keep it to herself –  I knew. I knew there’d be trouble up ahead.

I will also say this — I wasn’t expecting the little twist in the end with Kaitlin’s family history though and I did kind of wish that there was more development or… a better lead up to it..? because the minute the “secret” was out that was it. Like literally! I was left thinking “that’s it?!” It was a little underwhelming and the next thing you know Kaitlin and Bram’s story was wrapping up.

Emma_Shrugs

Remember – This is just my opinion. Maybe it’s because I love Mary’s writing that I may have expected a little more with the story development. I did feel the ending was a little too abrupt. But hey, at least it did have a definitive ending. No loose strings or questions asked (which I like and thankful for!) I would’ve just wanted.. oh I dunno a page or two more of Kaitlin and Bram. A page of them working it out and living happily ever after is nowhere near enough. 😉

But like I said earlier, I found this to be a is a nice standalone read that I recommend for anyone who’s short for time, a fan of quick reads, suffering from a reading slump and is not ready to commit to a book series yet, or just a good old fashion fan of contemporary romance. 😄

Oh, and it’s also considered YA fiction but I think this book is young reader (pre-teens) friendly. It’s definitely young love!

This is one of Mary E. Pearson’s earlier works and although I prefer her more recent fantasy fiction books, I still love her style of writing. It’s simple, easy to follow and the story just flows. Whether you’re a fan of Contemporary or YA Fantasy — I strongly recommend you check out Mary’s books (more specifically The Remnant Chronicles)!
