Evelina has worked hard to get where she is in life. At the young age of twenty-five she became the proud owner of the town’s most infamous café, Wildflowers. Not only does this café make the best cakes in town, but it hosts the most successful open mic nights, bringing singers from far and wide to own the stage and take their dreams to the next level.

Coming from an Italian background, Evelina has a large family, a bubbly personality and the kind of drive that makes her café the best of the best. She prides herself in her witty personality, bubbly demeanor and strength to take her dreams by the horns. She is unstoppable and determined.

That is, of course, until a biker club moves into the empty garage she shares a parking lot with. For years, that garage has been empty and Evelina has had the space entirely to herself. Now, there are cars, motorbikes, parties, half naked women, alcohol and a President that is rude, gorgeous and refusing to keep the noise down.

Her café is going to struggle if she doesn’t do something right away.

The problem is, they are refusing to move.

Evelina is going to have to dig deep and find any way she can to get them to leave…even if things have to get messy.

She’s worked too hard.

This is her lot. This is her town.

That gorgeous biker and his club are going to find themselves in the midst of a war…a turf war.

And Evelina plans to win.

• MY REVIEW •

Ooh. Okay. I think this might be the first MC romance book of Bella Jewel’s that I’ve read where it was definitely a lot more lighthearted, less MC and more contemporary romance.

HowToLose_DramaDramaDrama

When I first discovered Bella Jewel’s books, she quickly became an auto-buy author for me. Her dark MC romances have been some of my all time favourite reads. I’ve read enough to know what I can expect from her stories…

So it came as a bit of shock that this particular new MC series was a lot more lighthearted, more comic relief added, and certainly felt more contemporary in theme. The MC elements were evident but it wasn’t the complete focus. Biker Schmiker is character driven with 100% full of fiery banter between the hero and heroine.

I admit I have mixed feelings about this story and there was some getting used to in comparison to Bella’s other books. I felt like it was a little choppy— it alternated between a serious situation to lightheartedness, and then back again all throughout that it felt like a stop-start journey. Whilst the banter was entertaining and at times raunchy, the storyline was a little confusing and a bit much. So many plot points were in this one that it felt like one thing after another popped up for Eve and Riggs to deal with.

The story had amazing potential, especially with how Riggs and his club were first introduced into the small town Eve resides in. The chemistry between Eve and Riggs was zingy and kept me invested in seeing where the story would head to next (coz for the love of the book gods it was fucking unpredictable)! 😅

What confused me about this story was some of the crazy plotlines that seemed a little unbelievable. Not to mention some of the characters’ reactions were somewhat far-fetched (specifically the protagonists) in regards to said situations. It fringed on over-the-top madness. But I got to hand it to Bella for giving “crazy” a good crack! 😜

It was well-paced storytelling, action-packed, and full of dramatics. It’s told solely from Eve’s POV, but I really would’ve liked to have seen Riggs’ perspective as well, just so we can get an in-depth insight to his feelings too— especially considering he did some pretty shady things that I was surprised Eve would want anything more to do with him. But in saying that, there’s a good amount of character and relationship development that I grew to like Eve and Riggs more and more as I progressed through their story.

Both the leads are down to earth, relatable characters. Putting aside their cruel plotting to destroy one another, it’s clear they are caring, decent people. The overall atmosphere is modern and lighthearted. If you enjoy heated enemies-to-lovers/ hate-to-love romance stories with MC elements, then give this one a go. There’s plenty of game-playing that’ll have you turning those pages whilst grinning!

But I must point out that Riggs and Eve’s relationship was a bit of rollercoaster with tons of push and pull. For a good chunk of the story, their relationship was on-again-off-again unsteady, in which Riggs hooks up with other women. This type of trope is not a hard-no for me personally but I know it can be a bit of a no-no for other readers when it comes to their romance reads, and it’s why I included this bit of spoiler as a warning for those considering to read this book.

Please also note that it contains sensitive subject matters that may be triggering for some readers. It contains violence, assault, and strong sexual content. Readers 18+ only.

In my honest opinion, it’s a rocky start to a new series but it did hold my attention. Besides the constant sexual frustration coming off of Eve and Riggs that was all-out giddy to witness, the secondary characters were equally entertaining additions in keeping the story and their world appealing.

The friendships felt genuine and downright fun to see. There was plenty of comic relief within, but the banter, jokes, and little chats amongst the friends were some of the highlights.

The overall execution fell a little short for me, but it had a budding world-building and enough likable elements that by the end of the book I was looking forward to reading the next one. It’s a relatively short but sweet read. Bella’s effortless writing style and talent for creating quirky and engaging characters was delivered in this one no matter how complicated the storyline was.

As I mentioned earlier, tons of potential. I’m looking forward to seeing where Bella takes this series and how she plans to expand their world. An overall lively and playful MC-lite romance story between two fierce, strong-willed people!

RATING: ⭐⭐⭐

My husband hates me. But he’s also the only man who can save me.

Taken by a stranger, Santiago is my only hope. Except that I don’t know if he’s dead or alive. And for as cruel as he can be, the thought he might be gone is unbearable.

But he has nine lives, my monster.

He’s not finished with me yet. And soon I’m back at The Manor. Locked in my room. At his mercy.

I know I am despised.

I know I have become the face of his vengeance.

But there’s something else too. Something between us. It’s a dark and gnarled thing. And it has its claws around my heart.

• MY REVIEW •

TVD_Elena_Smirk

Oooh things have just gotten more complicated! I didn’t think situations could get any more fucked up between Ivy and Santiago…. but man, was I wrong!

Things to consider before starting this book:

  1. This is a continuous story. You will have to read Requiem of the Soul first.
  2. This is book two in this trilogy, so yes, like the previous one, this too will end in a cliffhanger.
  3. There are sensitive subject matters that may be triggering for some readers such as, violence, non-consensual sex, domestic abuse, and attempted suicide.
  4. This is dark romance with adult themes — readers 18+ only!

Now that we’ve gotten that out of the way let’s continue, shall we?

There’s a lot of complex and damaging situations going on in Reparation of Sin. Just when you think one fire is being put out, there’s another being fanned by a mystery antagonist(s) — whom at this point could be ANYBODY! 🤔

TVD_Damon_Drinking

Vengeance, hate, and jealousy is what’s driving these characters to take action. Whilst some parts of the storyline I found fairly predictable, one thing I am absolutely clueless on is who the true villain is. This is a dark, gritty romance that is full of suspicion, ulterior motives, and all around shady characters. It’s already 2/3 of the way through the story and I’m still hesitant of Ivy and Santiago. Eeep.

I’m going to be brutally honest… there are a ton of “facepalm” moments throughout. There are a couple of characters who stuck out like sore thumbs in this book that had me wanting to rip my hair out of frustration. But you know what? I commend the authors and their book for evoking deep emotion out of me. Just as Requiem of the Soul, this one held my attention and I was wholly invested in seeing the next obstacle in Ivy’s and Santiago’s twisted marriage. It picks up right after the conclusion of the first book, and ultimately starts the next plot in the story. The devious characters are in full force, and what’s worst is that it seems no one can be trusted in this world. Lots of little things are happening and they’re all interconnected and relating to Ivy and Santiago.

TVD_DamonElena_LookAtMe

And throughout it all, you’re witnessing the push and pull in their relationship. The twisted back and forth hate to love to hate mentality with these two has amped up because it’s more than vengeance at stake now. You’ll see Santiago struggle not only with his undeniable feelings for Ivy but with new developments brought on by his family and The Society. His inner monologue ended up being one of my favourite things to see.

Ivy on the other hand is more willing to open herself up to her growing feelings for Santiago but it seems every time she takes a leap, she falls flat on her ass, which I think is a big reason as to why at times she came off pitiful. Not going to lie, I felt disappointed in her decisions throughout this book. I could nitpick certain things that occurred that Ivy could have easily avoided. But funnily enough when I think back on what I’d read, it’s almost as if I just finished watching a turbulent episode of a telenovela. 😅 Hot, cold. Enemies, lovers. Trust, don’t trust. *phew!* There’s so much drama! Even between the sheets.

TVD_Elena_LoveHateAFineLine

Things are escalating and they’re escalating like crazy! Both Ivy and Santiago do some very questioning things. I can only hope that they redeem themselves in the next one. I wish I could say this book won’t leave you hanging like the first one did but I’d be lying. The cliffhanger in this one is torturous. If you had any patience, you’d wait for the third book before starting this trilogy. 🤭

Knight and Zavarelli fans, Ivy and Santiago’s story is not to be missed! If you enjoy dark romance reads, I think this storyline will be right up your alley. It has suspense, chemistry between the hero/ heroine, intense dynamics between a range of characters, and a storyline that’ll have you hooked with its twists and turns.

There’s a lot of intrigue surrounding all the characters in this world not just with protagonists, and I feel like we’ve only scratched the surface. There are a couple of secondary characters from the first book… *cough* “C” and “J” *cough* whom I was hoping to see more of and I’m giddy to say I got my wish! 🙌🙌 Despite having only a scene or two in this book, they played vital roles… aaaaaaand their personal story was divulged (I would love a full length novel on them but if it never happens, I can happily say I’m content with the appearances they made in this book).

It’s told from dual points of view and although it has slowed down a little in comparison to the first book, I still consider it to be fast-paced, and the world-building is lush! I’m talking quality atmosphere, dimensional storytelling, and complex characters! 👌 It’s definitely elements you would expect from both authors. Looking forward to the next book!

RATING: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

— BLURB —

It started with a single look, my obsession, my desire and need to possess the sweet, and incredibly naive Elena Romero.

Like a thief I came in the dead of night and stole her away from her protected castle and placed her in a gilded cage made of gold.

The arrangement had been made. Her father knew I was coming, knew I had intended to make him pay.

His empire was crumbling. He had no money, nothing of value to me, nothing except… her.

Which is why he agreed.

His precious, virgin daughter in return for a debt paid.

He thought I would break her, kill her, he had no idea what I had really planned.

She would become my wife.
She would bear my children.
She would bend to my will.

And I would go to any lengths to keep her by my side.

*This is a dark mafia romance that contains mature themes, graphic violence, and sexual content.*

— MY REVIEW —

So many emotions running through my mind thinking about what I had read. After having read the prequel Stolen Bride first, I was pumped to get onto the main book. I was lured into the mystery surrounding Julian and being in the same boat as Elena at not knowing what exactly was happening.

TVD_Elena_Boo

This was one roller coaster of a read! *phew* 🎢

It started off with a bang! Julian walks in, then walks out not even 10 mins later with his new bride-to-be in tow.. Who I might add did not have a single clue of what was happening. Poor girl.

Immediately, I was eating it up! I love a good mafia romance filled with secret agendas and motives — and Julian had it in spades. Told from dual perspectives, but even that doesn’t really help you with what the secret is. Why Julian has truly taken Elena.

It’s a relatively nice pacing, at least for the first half of the book but to be honest, I thought it started to drag a little by the second half. At times it felt like the story wasn’t progressing any further and was stuck in a loop of constant mistrust and apprehension when it came to Elena and Julian’s relationship.

Once they start divulging their feelings and open up to one another, there was almost always something popping up that kind of makes them second-guess everything that’s happened. Hence the roller coaster. They have so much hurdles to jump over, but to be honest their issues could have very well been resolved a lot earlier it wasn’t for the uncertainty between them.

Elena made a sweet first impression as the young, innocent girl who cares deeply but after a while, it got a little boring. You figure, once it all sinks in that she’s being held captive by a dangerous man and being forced to marry that she would be a little more wary and alert. Unfortunately as the book furthered along, Elena stayed just as naive and gullible as ever. Didn’t even want to see what was right in front of her.

I wish she had more character development. I would’ve liked to have seen her mature a little more and pluck up some courage to stand up for herself once in a while.

Julian was a little more of a developed character. He went from someone who strictly had a goal (which is to mete out revenge), to someone who eventually grew some conscience over Elena’s feelings.

TVD_DamonElena_Bed

Julian isn’t the biggest, baddest Mafioso I’ve read about. Maybe my preferences have gotten darker and darker over the years when it comes to mafia romance, but I felt this one was just too tamed. Yes, there’s violence. Yes, there’s definitely some war brewing between enemies. But there wasn’t enough build-up, and by the time I reached the end, it was all very anti-climactic.

There was a lot of loose ends with this book that bothered me, and I can’t help thinking if the authors had initially stuck with their original plan of having a duet instead of one full-length novel, the entire world-building as a whole and character development would’ve been more in depth.

I was curious about the secondary characters introduced in this book, specifically Markus and Lucca, the closest men working for Julian. But they were literally only present in the book at the beginning and at the end, which was a pity because I saw some real potential for further world-building by having more people in play within the story. Both Markus and Lucca clearly have their own stories, so I couldn’t help think are there plans for books of their own? Will it become a series or is Savage Beginnings still a standalone? There are also other characters mentioned that seem to already have backstories — Once again, are these characters from past books and are just making appearances? Questions. Questions. Questions.

But unfortunately, their history with Julian is only brushed upon, and I was left wondering what their deal was, and how they all came about to know one another. 🤔

The secondary characters are fairly minor in this story line. Strictly centering around Julian and Elena, and seeing their progression from captor/ captive to man and wife. Not going to lie, there’s instant chemistry and spark between the pair. It’s one of the main reasons I was drawn to the book. But after having some time to let it all sink in, I’m also questioning whether the relationship was truly love or a case of Stockholm Syndrome? Although there is some obvious attraction between them, by the end I still wasn’t completely sold on their loving relationship. Like I mentioned earlier, maybe if this was duet, I would’ve seen their relationship grow at a more realistic pace. There was very little development in getting to know each other on a deeper level. Julian’s bossiness and dominance was consistent from start to finish despite considering giving Elena more freedom, yet it never came about. Not really.

TVD_DamonElena_Stare

I easily give the first half of the book a solid four stars. I’ve had to lower my overall rating a smidge in the end due to some repetitiveness in the story, the anti-climactic ending, and the stories involving Julian’s men that were left open. I still found the overall plot gripping. If you like semi-dark mafia romances, with hostage/ captive story lines, then this is an absolute must. Both Julian and Elena are remarkably decent people who happen to be living in a grisly world with its own set of rules. A good book for readers wanting to dip their toe in mafia romance but not quite ready for full-out grittiness and brutality that usually comes into play with this genre.

I was born a monster. Cruelty ran in my veins like poison. It ran in the veins of every Vitiello man, passed on from father to son, an endless spiral of monstrosity. A born monster shaped into an even worse monster by my father’s blade and fists and harsh words. I was raised to become Capo, to rule without mercy, to dish out brutality without a second thought. Raised to break others. When Aria was given to me in marriage, everyone waited with baited breath to see how fast I’d break her like my father broke his women. How I’d crush her innocence and kindness with the force of my cruelty.Breaking her would have taken little effort. It came naturally to me.I was gladly the monster everyone feared. Until her. Author’s note: Bound By Honor in Luca’s POV.

— MY REVIEW —

** This mini review is for the bonus prologue only!

The prologue was a great little addition to Luca Vitiello. Although it’s bonus content, there’s nothing new within that those who’ve read the book are missing out on. It pretty much sums up what he has gone through to get to where he’s currently at at the present time, the lead up to his “new” life with Aria, and the things he has to constantly go through to keep his position, his power, and his family safe and secure. If you’ve read Bound by Honor and Luca Vitiello, and want just a little bit more, then this prologue is a nice add-on.

Sofia knows how it feels to be the consolation prize.
Too young.
Not blond.
And definitely not an ice princess.
Her sister is—was all those things. Perfection. Until she wasn’t. Until she ran off to be with the enemy and left her fiancé behind.
Now Sofia is given to Danilo in her sister’s stead, knowing she’ll never be more than second best. Yet, she can’t stop longing for the love of the man she’s been crushing on even when he was still her sister’s.
Danilo is a man who’s used to get what he wants.
Power.
Respect.
The sought-after ice princess.
Until another man steals his bride-to-be. Danilo knows that for a man in his position losing his woman can lead to a loss of face.
Wounded pride.
Thirst for revenge.
A dangerous combination—one Danilo can’t leave behind, not even when a girl just as precious takes her sister’s place to placate him. Yet, she’s got one flaw: she’s not her sister.
Unable to forget what he’s lost, Danilo might lose what he’s been given.

— MY REVIEW —

** This mini review is for the chapter included in this book only! Please don’t read any further if you don’t want any teasers (especially with Fragile Longing still a month away)

Before I start, if you’ve been contemplating whether or not to get Kiss Me In The Dark (specifically for Cora’s content), and wondering what is included from Fragile Longing… The prologue and the first chapter is what you’ll be getting. If you’re not too fussed with getting an early taste of the storyline, then I highly recommend you grab your copy now — plus all proceeds go to donations! 😊

👏 Okay! Time for the goss!

Although Fragile Longing is a standalone, I recommend you to have read Twisted Pride (from the Camorra Chronicles) first because it definitely coincides with the timeline from that book…. and it’ll give new readers a better scope of the relationship between Danilo, Sofia and Serafina.

“Always less. Never enough.”

We’re only given the first chapter but already I am liking Sofia. After how many books, I am still floored at how well Cora can write her characters in a way that really shows their age and the life they’ve lived so far. I love the innocence and naivety of her young heroines before all hell breaks loose and they’re pushed into a world of darkness, adulting, and unrequited love. Hehe.

I initially wasn’t a big fan of romance reads that involve age gaps, but since reading Sweet Temptation, I’ve come to look forward to reading who else of Cora’s characters will be paired up. When I first read that Sofia would become Danilo’s end game, after Serafina was clearly… well not! I was already reeling at the possibility of it becoming another brilliant, yet complex story similar to Sweet Temptation where they really have to work at their relationship, and find a balance–especially with their age gaps.

And just like all of Cora’s previous books, I enjoy the fact that despite that they’re considered dark romances, there’s obvious lightheartedness and even humor sprinkled all throughout.

“Slowly I sat up and wiped my eyes. I hopped off my bed and checked my face in the mirror. My eyes were puffy and my nose red. Fina was a pretty crier. I was not.”

I shouldn’t have found this moment funny, but I did… maybe because I easily related, and maybe because the second I read it, this image popped into my head…

KimK_UglyCry

All I know is Cora’s heroines are relatable in so many ways, and their feelings and attitudes towards things and situations are quite realistic, in particular to when they’re still in their youth and don’t necessarily keep their thoughts to themselves yet.

Great start to Fragile Longing! I can’t wait to read it in its entirety! Sofia is clearly living in her sister’s shadow so I can’t wait to see her when she reaches of age, and what Danilo’s reaction will be of her by then. Eeep! ❤

— MY REVIEW —

OohLala

This was a nice introduction to what’s to come in Savage Beginnings. There’s enough intrigue and mystery in Julian who’s come out of nowhere to take Elena as his.

I’m usually not a fan of prequels (especially if the main novel hasn’t been released yet) because it’s literally a teaser. But there’s some positive aspects to prequels as well — There’s enough to give you a gist of what you could expect in the storyline, between the characters, and you get an idea of what the author (or in this case; authors’) writing style is like.

J.L. Beck and C. Hallman are both new-to-me-authors but after having read this little novella, I’m sold that I’ll have to check out their other collaborations. There’s a nice flow and pace to their storytelling. It’s easy to follow. Right from the beginning I was already curious about Julian’s motive and why he wants Elena so badly. The mood is set and it’s deviously juicy!

With very little revealed in this novella of how this story will develop (other than the contract), I did gather that Julian is the big bad mafioso that you don’t want to mess with, and Elena is pretty much the innocent young lady who’s going to change everything. Hehe 🤭

Mafia Romance? ✔

Arranged Marriage? ✔

Suspense? ✔ Revenge? ✔ Betrayal? ✔

Chemistry? ✔✔

If any of these elements call out to you, then you might want to add this one to your TBR.

Sidenote: I’m currently reading an ARC of Savage Beginnings and yes, I highly recommend you read this prequel just before or when Savage Beginnings is released so that you won’t have to wait too long to see the interactions between these two leads. Trust me, you won’t want to wait! 😉

I normally wouldn’t bother rating a prequel because like I said earlier, it’s an introduction to a book… but for the sake of this mini review (and in conjunction with my upcoming review for Savage Beginnings), I’ll add one in.
