• MY REVIEW •

“She wasn’t sure if I was her savior or her demise.

Neither was I.”

Ooh I am buzzing. This was an exceptionally intricate new mafia world Reilly has created. I’m already anticipating more from the Davaneys… one brother in particular. 😍 Eeep. There’s a lot to take in, but overall, this book was an introduction to the world-building, the Irish mob, and to the Davaney family.

Lorcan and Aislinn have a push-and-pull relationship all throughout, but there’s no denying the insurmountable attraction and lust whenever these two are together.

Reilly’s mafia romance books all have a certain amount of spicy content (and this may just be me), but I found this had an extra level of heat. Phwoar. It has copious amounts of smutty, filthy, sweaty, NSFW scenes that will just about make you fan yourself. Lorcan and Aislinn have somewhat of a Dom/sub dynamic in the bedroom and on occasion toes the line of CNC, but make no mistake Aislinn is fiery and strong-willed and Lorcan is fiercely protective over her. If you like a little taboo in your romance reads, you’ll get a dash of it in this story.

They also have quite an age-gap between them, but in all honestly, they have similar levels of maturity. Aislinn has had to grow-up and take adult responsibilities pretty early on in life, and it exhibited in her personality and through her actions in certain situations. But in saying that, if you’re not a fan of teenage FMCs (although already of age) getting together with MMCs well into their adulthood, you may not be in favour of Lorcan and Aislinn’s relationship. Please take into consideration before starting this book.

Don’t compare Lorcan to Reilly’s other mafiosos. He’s definitely his own person, with his own beliefs and a backstory that explains why he is the way he is in the present. He’s undoubtedly dangerous, connected, and holds influence, but in the end he’s also very human. You’ll witness his limitations, his desires, and in time see his defences lowering. If you adore morally-grey heroes who fall first, add Lorcan to your list.

Although there’s a good amount of mafia elements, this book is romance heavy. It focuses on developing Lorcan and Aislinn’s relationship. The mutual attraction’s evident from the very beginning, but anything deeper between the two was a slow-burn process. I quickly became invested in seeing how their relationship would evolve. They deal with a range of real-life struggles as a couple and separate insecurities that many can easily relate to.

“You are bound to me.

But I think you’re scared of liking me.”

Other than the MCs, there’s an intriguing cast of secondary characters and strong familial dynamics introduced that I can’t wait to see more of in the series, but you can already get an idea of their roles and personality traits from their appearances here. There are also minor characters that added more dimension to Lorcan and Aislinn’s world. I always enjoy some brotherly banter and there was plenty of it throughout that I’m sure will make you smirk just as much as it made me.

There are sensitive subject matters included, one in particular I thought was well thought-out with care and written beautifully. Not only did I love the additional element, but it added diversity, another layer of relatability, and a sweet innocence to these MCs’ story. On the flip side, there are also dark themes that some readers may find disturbing or triggering such as flesh trade/prostitution and graphic, brutal violence and abuse. It’s gruesome, bloody, and may be tough to get through. It’s intended for readers 18+ only.

It’s well-paced storytelling with a vivid backdrop that transports you effortlessly into their world. I was immersed in Lorcan and Aislinn’s Irish roots and it gave me such wanderlust from the scenic locations, to the comforting food, to the close-knit community.

It does conclude with a “happy-for-now” ending, so I’m taking a stab in saying we’ll see more of Lorcan and Aislinn in the following book(s). Their characters weren’t as fleshed-out as I would’ve liked, but if their story continues, I’m hoping there’ll be more developments to come. I did find the conclusion to their book refreshing, showing the start of their lives together rather than years down the track. It’s open-ended and leaves room for possibilities which I’m totally down for!

I’ll be honest, the next book centres on a character I very much was not a fan of in this one. I’m already curious to know how Reilly plans to turn this character around, and who they’ll be paired with. Double eeep.

This was a highly anticipated book for me and it was undoubtedly a gripping read. A little slow to kick-off, but once Lorcan and Aislinn get in the thick of things, you’ll be hard-pressed to put it down. It’s sweet AND spicy. It’s official— the Irish mobsters are here and they’ve left quite an exciting first impression!

RATING: ⭐⭐⭐⭐½

I’m not supposed to fall in love with my husband. It’s not part of my plan.

Forgive me.

Those were the first words Santos Augustine spoke to me before we sealed an unbreakable oath. A contract signed in blood binding me to him as payment for my father’s sins.

Wearing the mask of legitimacy, this powerful crime family has returned to Avarice to punish those who have wronged them and take what they’ve always been denied, a place among the elite.

Forced to marry my enemy, I’m thrust into his world of secrets and betrayals.

My husband is a dangerous man. And he has dangerous enemies. But it’s when I’m attacked that his fury is unleashed.

It’s then I see what it means to belong to Santos Augustine.

And although I know the safest place for me is in his bed, I can’t let myself fall in love with my husband.

“She and I have always been destined to be together. For better or worse. Even before our blood oath. We can each be the other’s savior. Or the other’s destruction. This is our destiny. Until death do us part.”

To put it simply… I loved it. Immensely. It had everything I expected a Natasha Knight romance novel would have, and it did not disappoint. Elements you can expect:

  • Tons of secrecy
  • Plot twists and suspense
  • Heartbreak
  • Some shady, shady characters
  • Complicated relationships

Nothing is what it seems where Madelena and Santos are concerned. One minute I’d be on the edge of my seat reeling, the next I’d be screaming into my pillow. It was utterly thrilling, angsty, and one hundred percent unputdownable.

Madelena is a mixture of damsel-in-distress and defiance, and you never know which side she’ll veer towards with each situation she’s thrown into. Santos is a conundrum that I found myself trying to decipher, and his unpredictability is one of the main factors in what kept me invested in seeing this story through. These MCs are broken in some way or another and it has resulted in their complex mentalities.

This is the first book in The Augustine Brothers duet and it painstakingly ends on a cliffhanger. It concluded with so many possibilities, plenty of developments that need resolving, and a handful of jaw-dropping plot points that I cannot wait to get to the bottom of in the next book. Knight has done an excellent job at creating a dark and curious world that I was easily transported to.

Just be aware that this dark mafia romance delves into sensitive subject matters that some readers may find triggering or disturbing to read. It contains graphic violence, domestic abuse, child abuse, self-harm, and mental and physical scarring. It has dark themes throughout, as well as sexual content intended for readers 18+ only.

If you enjoy dark, mafia romance books with a lot of push-and-pull between its MCs, I think this one is a must-read. Although there’s some spice, in comparison to some of Knight’s other books it’s not as steamy. Madelena and Santos’ relationship spans several years, and with how the story unfolds, I consider their intimacy a bit of a slow-burn development. This first book is an introduction to not only the dangerous elite world they’re associated to, but the intriguing group dynamics amongst the cast of characters. You’ll constantly be second-guessing anything and everything, and as the suspense builds, there’s a sense of desperation in the air that’ll have you anxious to figure out who can and cannot be trusted.

The characters are constantly evolving, and whilst they’re not completely fleshed-out, I have no doubt there’s still more to see. I fast became curious about the contrasting familial dynamics in Madelena and Santos’ respective families, so I’m hoping to see more of it in the next book. There’s a couple of secondary characters that caught my attention, and despite this being a duet, I’m lowkey hoping they get their own books in the future.

It’s well-paced storytelling and switches back and forth from the two MCs POV. There’s a sweet balance between the mafia and romance elements that makes this a solid dark mafia romance read. All in all, it’s a highly promising first half of the duet filled with intrigue, uncertainty, and seduction. It’s another well-put together narrative by Knight that I’m eager to read Deliver Me From Evil already! If you’re an avid fan, you’ll want to add this to your TBR.

RATING: ⭐⭐⭐⭐½

— BLURB —

My one-night stand.

A ruthless bastard.

A heartless billionaire.

The man who ruled his empire with a cold head and an even colder heart. And most importantly, my son’s father. Except, he wasn’t aware of that little fact. To the media, Byron Ashford is a Billionaire King. To me, he’s a reminder of the hottest, most forbidden, night of my life. And my biggest mistake.

I hadn’t seen him in years and hoped we’d never cross paths again.

But then, my best-laid plans always seem to go astray. Now, I need his help to bail me out of trouble. He’s a billionaire and I’m just a broke, debt-riddled surgeon.

Against my better judgment, I sought him out. It should have been easy, in and out. Except, nothing with Byron Ashford was ever easy. He refuses to hand out free favors. And the price for his help?

My freedom. Literally.

He wants to shackle me to him with a marriage I don’t want then throw away the key.

His demands are scandalous. His rules are dangerous for my heart.

It was supposed to be a mutually beneficial deal, but nothing about Byron is ever that simple. Once he slips the ring onto my finger, the rules change.

His demands grow. He no longer just wants to own my body. He also wants my heart and soul. But I’m not that young, naive woman anymore.

Too bad this billionaire forgot one thing. Nobody can own your heart unless you give it freely.

And this time, I’m not blinded by his smile and especially not by his lies.

Me. A bratva princess.

Our fathers insist we remain married for six months before we’re allowed to consider an annulment.

“She laid claim to every part of me. The light and the dark. The man and the monster.”

haleyloomis Tumblr blog with posts - Tumbig.com

When epic couples from The Saints Series have offspring and they end up getting paired-up in the undeniably sinful and addictive spin-off, second-gen series; The Sinners Series, then you know it’s not a book to be missed! 😍❤

Luca Cotroni, head of the Italian Mafia and Mariya Koslov, the Bratva princess are both confident, fierce individuals. But together— from their intense battle of wits to their combustible raunchy romps they are fire and ice tenfold!

I hadn’t wanted to put any high expectations on this book, preferring to just let Luca and Mariya take me along on their journey. All I knew was that it had to at least be swoon-worthy, highly unpredictable, and leave me happy sighing in contentment. Heard has delivered these elements and more. The fourth book in the series and I’m still floored by the emotions the characters evoke out of me. There were pivotal parts of this story I hadn’t seen coming and if I’m going to be completely honest, wasn’t the slightest bit prepared for. Heads up! 😱

It’s a fast-paced narrative that you can easily read in one sitting. It’s full of action and suspense, light and dark, and has appearances from an array of past and present characters within this mafia world that has been vividly created and expanded. I have not encountered a single book by Heard that hasn’t been of high-quality storytelling. It is true to its word as Mafia Romance. It has equal parts mafia elements to its romance counterpart that mesh together oh-so effortlessly.

But please heed the author’s caution included in the book’s description. This story contains dark content that may be triggering for some readers. It contains kidnapping and graphic violence resulting in PTSD and permanent physical trauma. Intended for readers 18+ only.

Due to the fast-pacing and constant progressive storyline, I felt the individual character developments weren’t as fleshed-out as I would’ve loved to have seen, or in comparison to leading characters in previous books of this series. However, you do get a good sense of Luca and Mariya’s history and the strong bonds their families share. I also think Luca and Mariya’s growing intimacy made up for the limited character growth. I found their interactions entertaining and seeing them navigate through their emotions before and after their spur-of-the-moment nuptials was hella engaging! 😁

“Just you and me, principessa.” The way he calls me princess simultaneously sounds like a curse and a caress.

One of my favourite highlights was seeing my favourite morally-grey hero from The Saints Series. He may be older—a father no less, but he still knows how to draw your attention. The secondary characters banded here more than ever, and I adored seeing every single one of the swoon-worthy Mafiosos. As always, Heard has included some great comradery and solid bonds that are just as gripping to see as the romantic aspects of the story.

It’s hearty and with such lovable characters who all have striking personalities. Whilst it’s the heroes that initially draw you into this series, you soon discover the women make just as much of an impact. The heroines are vulnerable but not to the point where they’re complete damsels-in-distress. They’re genuine and relatable, and their strength is something I appreciated seeing. Heard has written a worthy spawn of Alexei Koslov and Isabella Terrero in Mariya. I couldn’t have imagined a better heroine for Luca Cotroni. She’s spunky, stereotypically girly 🤭, yet a true-blue warrior through and through!

I think this about all the heroes within this series but I can’t help it because its absolutely true— they are some of the most sweetest, most caring, most protective badass men I’ve read about, and Luca Cotroni is no different. If you’ve read Cruel Saints and familiar with his parents; Lucian Cotroni and Elena Lucas then you won’t be surprised by Luca’s character. Eeep.

All in all, another majorly impressive addition to The Sinners Series that I will undoubtedly reread over and over. It pulls at the heartstrings whilst at the same time keep you on the edge of your seat.

This series consists of standalone novels but in my opinion it’s best to read in publishing order to experience the full extent of the Priesthood, the territories they each rule, and each of their love stories. This is a mafia romance book with age-gap, secret crush, and surprise marriage tropes. The anticipation was worth it and I ended up thoroughly enjoying it. I highly recommend it to fellow dark/mafia romance fans!

“I’ll be yours as long as you are mine”.

PPL_Hanna_Happy

Wow. Wow. Wow. This is one book that I will be putting into my list of favourite mafia romance reads! Once I started it, it was unputdownable. It ended up being such an enjoyable, gripping story that I almost wish I could experience reading it for the first time all over again. 😍😍 It has an amazing balance of playful banter, toe-curling romance, and lip-biting action and suspense!

When I had read the prequel for this series, I was immediately smacked with originality and a cast of characters that all piqued my interest. This book not only re-iterated those elements but it exceeded my expectations of what a mafia romance book should encompass.

The storytelling was steady-paced and constantly builds-up in intensity and developments between its protagonists. However, you need to read Corrupted Pleasure before starting this one as it introduces you to the morally-grey heroes and the wild heroines who’ve caught their eye. The prequel also shows how Wynter and Basilio initially crossed paths, and is a great introduction to the different group dynamics and relationships that you’ll see more of in Villainous Kingpin.

With multiple POVs and unpredictable plotlines, I was in suspense all throughout and felt like I was in one massive emotional rollercoaster. This mafia romance weaved in and out of light and dark settings with the assist of the characters who all played crucial roles in making it such an angst-ridden yet addictive narrative. Winners has created vivid, fleshed-out characters from the antagonists who were believably cruel and down-right despicable, to the protagonists toeing the line of antihero-to-hero with their overly protective vibes and well-timed light-heartedness.

Although this is ultimately a lovers-to-enemies-to-lovers romance story, it does contain sensitive subject matter that may be triggering for some readers such as, graphic violence, torture, domestic abuse, and sexual assault— resulting in certain characters dealing with PTSD. It’s intended for readers 18+ only.

I was experiencing major second-lead-syndrome whilst reading this book, and I think that has a lot to do with how quickly I became invested in all the characters within the Kingpins of the Syndicate world. I love Wynter and Basilio as individuals and as a couple, and their budding relationship was pure swoon-worthiness, but there’s a strong cast of male supporting characters included, each of whom had their own individual personalities that stood out just as much as Basilio. So, it’s safe to say the accompanying side stories happening in the background were just as interesting, hell-a entertaining, and added another dimension to the overall story.

In saying that, I should point out that I’m relatively new to Winners’ mafia romance books. Other than the prequel, this is only my second book of hers. There’s no doubt I loved it and cannot wait to read the next one in the series, but I must point-out that there are crossovers. Winners has written-in secondary characters that are initially from her other mafia romance series. If like me and you haven’t read those books, you may be taken aback by these characters and their roles and relationships to the Kingpins. There’s a lot to take in and it can get a little confusing and overwhelming keeping up with the complex family trees and associations. Winners does summarize the links these characters have, but if you want their in-depth stories, then I suggest you read her Belles & Mobsters series.

I think Winners has created such world-building that is ominous yet somehow adventurous? 🤔😜 Wynter and Basilio go through quite a tough journey, not only dealing with consequences of their family history but the struggles of keeping their relationship when so many factors come into play in keeping them apart. I was absorbed by their character growth, determination, and their overall love and loyalty. Not to mention the copious amounts of heart-fluttering scenes these two shared!

“He warned me he was a villain when we met. He never warned me he’d steal my heart.”

If you enjoy age-gap, enemies-to-lovers tropes, with secret romantic rendezvous encased in a modern Underworld backdrop, then you have got to read this one! The contrast between the heroines—freshly graduated college students getting mixed up with charmingly dangerous mobsters resulted in a NA contemporary meets adult dark romance. 😊 It has solid friendships, brotherhood, and a worthy HEA. Avid fans of mafia romances won’t be disappointed. The writing is intricate and hefty, but also effortless to follow. This book has set the bar and I’m giddy to see what’s to come for the rest of the series! It’s an absolute must-read!

Isabelle

Just when I was beginning to trust my husband, he betrayed me.

Just when I thought I was falling in love he showed me the beast he truly is.

I understand his thirst for revenge. But I don’t want to play this game of pawn and puppet master.

No matter how his hands make my heart race and my body crave his devil’s touch, I won’t give in.

I love his daughter.

But I can’t let myself fall in love with her father.

Jericho

I have exactly what I want. Revenge.

Soon everything the Bishops have will be mine.

But it will cost me more than I bargained.

Isabelle Bishop hates me. As she should.

I know what I am. And now she does too.

But falling in love with my wife was never part of my plan.

• MY REVIEW •

As more characters’ stories are told I am becoming more and more obsessed with the IVI world. Jericho’s and Isabelle’s story in the Devil’s Pawn Duet is a suspenseful and angsty addition to the exclusive secret society. It not only reveals the reasons behind the long-running feud between the St. James’ and the Bishops, but as the story unravels and a gradual development builds between Jericho and Isabelle, it prompts a melding of families, a rollercoaster of emotions, misguided trust, and a whole lot of raunchy romps!

“Just as she’s mine, so am I hers. We belong to one another. Until death do us part.”

TVD_DamonElena_Bed

I found this book slowed in pacing from the first one. Whilst it wasn’t as gripping as the first half of the story, I was still very much invested in seeing how things would turn out, not just with their relationship, but with how the plot twists from Devil’s Pawn would unfold.

Please note, this is a continuous storyline, you must read Devil’s Pawn (book one) first before reading Devil’s Redemption. It also contains sensitive subject matters that may be triggering for some readers such as, violence, child abuse, domestic abuse, suicide, and sexual assault. It also contains sexual content that borderlines con/non-con and minor BDSM. Intended for readers 18+ only.

What I took away most from this book is the strong familial focus. The St. James family may be a complex bunch and each one scarred in their own way but they’re all resilient, and despite any disagreements, they’re always a united front. Besides the interesting dynamic between Jericho and Isabelle, seeing interactions and contrast amongst his family was just as equal a highlight to look forward to. It might sound a little unusual as this is ultimately a dark setting romance story, but his family (as complicated as they are) provided some light and uplifting breaks in between intense scenes.

I’m not going to lie, I didn’t find Isabelle as likeable in this book as much as the first one. As the situation became more and more ominous, I found Isabelle’s mistrust and actions frustrating at times. Devil’s Redemption is Jericho’s second chance, an opportunity to break away from the cycle of his family’s tortured past, and his character growth is one main element that I ended gravitating towards (and rightfully so).

If you love tortured “alphaholes” whose character traits stem from heartbreak and a cruel backstory, then you need to meet Jericho St. James. You may not agree or sympathise with his behaviour at all times but you know where it’s stemming from, and that’s the beauty of his character— he still has redeemable qualities to him. Their feelings altered from hate to love throughout the course of their marriage, yet it’s Jericho who realises and embraces it first, despite the initial conflict between their families and his deep hatred of all the Bishops. Usually with the dark romance books I encounter, the heroine is the first to acknowledge her feelings, so I found it a refreshing change of atmosphere in this instance to see a bit of an emotional role reversal, per se.

“An angel for a devil.”

I would’ve loved a bit of more intensity and punchy suspense before the HEA but overall, it’s still an exciting read for avid fans of dark romances. As I mentioned earlier, this was an amazing addition to the IVI world that Knight (and Zavarelli) originally created and introduced with The Society Trilogy.

It’s very family-oriented with this book focusing a great deal on Jericho and Isabelle finding peace and learning to heal from their past.

Knight is masterful at writing dark romance stories with an enemies-to-lovers trope, that if you’ve read any of her previous work, you know that her characters always have zingy banter and hot chemistry between them right from their very first encounter. It’s what makes you instantly hooked on wanting to know their story. This one is no different!

It’s a must-read if you want to continue with the IVI world. Although this duet is a standalone story, I would still highly recommend you read The Society Trilogy first. It introduces you to their world, how their society operates, the familial and social standing within, and you’ll have a better understanding of the relationships of certain characters who make appearances in this duet.

A bittersweet conclusion to the Devil’s Pawn duet. It was tumultuous and at times heartbreaking but Jericho’s and Isabelle’s journey was undeniably heartfelt leaving me with happy contentment.
