She does everything right. So what could go wrong?

Mackenzie “Mac” Cabot is a people pleaser. Her demanding parents. Her prep school friends. Her long-time boyfriend. It’s exhausting, really, always following the rules. Unlike most twenty-year-olds, all she really wants to do is focus on growing her internet business, but first she must get a college degree at her parents’ insistence. That means moving to the beachside town of Avalon Bay, a community made up of locals and the wealthy students of Garnet College.

Mac’s had plenty of practice suppressing her wilder impulses, but when she meets local bad boy Cooper Hartley, that ability is suddenly tested. Cooper is rough around the edges. Raw. Candid. A threat to her ordered existence. Their friendship soon becomes the realest thing in her life.

Despite his disdain for the trust-fund kids he sees coming and going from his town, Cooper soon realizes Mac isn’t just another rich clone and falls for her. Hard. But as Mac finally starts feeling accepted by Cooper and his friends, the secret he’s been keeping from her threatens the only place she’s ever felt at home.

— BLURB —

College was supposed to be my chance to get over my ugly-duckling complex and spread my wings. Instead, I wound up in a sorority full of mean girls. I already have a hard time fitting in, so when my Kappa Chi sisters issue the challenge, I can’t say no.

The dare: seduce the hottest new hockey player in the junior class.

Conor Edwards is a regular at Greek Row parties…and in Greek Row sorority beds. He’s the one you fall for before you learn that guys like him don’t give girls like me a second glance. Except Mr. Popular throws me for a loop—rather than laughing in my face, he does me a solid by letting me take him upstairs to pretend we’re getting busy.

Even crazier, now he wants to keep pretending. Turns out Conor loves games, and he thinks it’s fun to pull the wool over my frenemies’ eyes.

But resisting his easy charm and surfer-boy hotness is darn near impossible. Though I’m realizing there’s much more to Conor’s story than his fan club can see.

And the longer this silly ruse goes on, the greater the danger of it all blowing up in my face.

— MY REVIEW —

ChrisHemsworth_Smile

Okay…

First off — I was not expecting to score an early copy of The Dare. I had a plan of rereading the first three books in Briar U before the release of this one so all the characters were fresh in my mind. But now, after having read this… my new game plan is to go back to the previous books because I am nowhere near ready to say goodbye to this amazing world that Elle has created.

If you’re unaware Briar U is a spin-off series to Elle’s original NA sports romance series; Off-Campus. If you read my reviews for those books (I’ll put the links at the bottom of this review)… I was 100% a Dean Di Laurentis fan! Solid. Like, nothing was going to sway me away from him. As far as I was concerned Dean was… King. Bae. Swoon worthy. Book BF Goals! Whatevs.

But in struts (yep…struts) Conor Fucking Edwards and practically squeezes himself into the throne right alongside Dean.

KateUpton_Fans

I love Elle’s heroes in both her sports romance series’ because whilst they’re popular and seem to have the image of well-put together people, they’re nowhere near perfection that the rest of the student body seem to think. They have their own insecurities just like anybody else. They’re not your stereotypical arrogant jocks that think they’re better than everyone else. They’re also not all about the sports either. They’re witty, intelligent (they actually take their education seriously), have manners, standards, and are truly loyal individuals.

Conor is all those things and more. You couldn’t ask for a better friend and boyfriend!

“He’d rather make people around him feel good about themselves, even when it provides no personal gain for himself.”

You’ll see a lot of insecurities in this book. Just like the previous books in the series, you get to see these characters’ backstories prior to Briar University and hockey. You’ll see what hang ups they have about themselves and their family dynamics in comparison to their relationships with their friends.

Conor has a shady past that haunts him. But despite lingering issues, he manages to keep a very easy-going, level headed attitude for the most part — which I have to say in my opinion plays a essential role in some situations of this book.

Conor and Taylor are a perfect match. They balance each other out and whenever one of them is down, the other knows just how to pick them back up. The way they support one another when they don’t have the strength or courage to do it for themselves is one of the uplifting aspects of this book. Put aside all the fun and games, and blossoming romance between these two and you’ll see the strong friendship they’ve formed (even if it started from an unusual situation).

You’ll discover with this series (along with the Off-Campus series) is that all these leading characters have different, yet quite realistic situations that they’re dealing with that’s relatable no matter your age.

Taylor struggles with a lot of personal issues that she deals with all throughout the book. It’s insecurities that a lot of people can connect with on one level or another. Body image, self-doubt, low self-esteem, and a lack of confidence in one’s self worth are serious matters, and they are all present in Taylor’s personal story. Not to mention the fact that Taylor is a young woman who’s still navigating through life at school. But she’s also caring, thoughtful, humble and just so darn adorable.

Elle is not afraid of tackling difficult subject matters in her books, and The Dare is a great example of the awareness she puts out there, by having her characters really open up about these topics — and in turn as a reader (who may or may not know much about certain issues) learns more and becomes mindful of it.

But I should warn, besides the sensitive matters that these characters face, there’s also some sexual harassment and breach of consent within that may trigger some readers. Nothing graphic, but it is present.

Elle did an amazing job of discussing these matters with care, leaving not only her characters with power and choices to do something about it (which I know is not always the case in reality), but in this particular instance it left me feeling satisfied with how things concluded.

It’s well-paced with great expansion to an already ongoing world-building, and told from dual POVs. There’s a lovely balance of light and shade within their story. It’s never too heavy that it leaves one feeling drained, but it’s not a fluffy love story either. It’s current, full of substance with deep content and obvious character growth from both Taylor and Conor as individuals and as a couple.

One thing that stood out to me was the positive support system both these leads had. Other than the swoony romance, I’ve always loved the friendships that Elle has introduced in her books. This one did not disappoint. Their friends play significant roles in their lives.

With Taylor, she has a kickass bestie who not only is a firecracker but would easily throw down for Taylor in a heartbeat. She’s also not afraid to give Taylor a wake-up call whenever needed.

With Conor, it’s his teammates/ roommates who’ve become his close friends and have his back in any situation (despite their unrelenting but hilarious banter). They were the perfectly timed comic relief.

Theirs was a rollercoaster of a relationship with a lot of push and pull, a lot of second-guessing, and doubt that will have you going through a range of emotions from frustrated and anxious to hopeful and optimistic.

“Worst case, I get a good friend out of the deal. Best case, I screw her brains out. Win-win either way.”

ChrisHemsworth_PillowThrow
😂😂 Oh Conor… *shakes head*

And whilst hockey is undeniably present in this book, it was however hockey-light in comparison to the other books in the series. There’s a good chunk of it in the first half but as Taylor and Conor’s relationship develops further, hockey eventually takes a back seat.

The friendships here is by far the strongest highlight in my opinion with the secondary characters — but mostly between Taylor and Conor themselves. Some of my fave parts were them just getting to know one another, or casually chatting about random things. It was effortless, and lighthearted, and organic — and no doubt the introduction scene where their stories kicks off is a part of the book I’ve must’ve read numerous times by now because it’s THE funniest thing I have read in a long time. I’m talking snort-laughing and tears-in-my-eyes kinda funny!

This book will leave you with a smile on your face and feeling just a little bit lighter. If this was the final book (and I’m talking about Elle never going back into this fictional world again), then I say it ended beautifully.

“Listen up, everybody! It’s time to play Dare or Dare.”

KateUpton_Shrug

If you’re game, then I highly recommend you get onto this one immediately! The message and life lessons are insightful and uplifting. And you will love Conor Edwards. He’s a beautiful human being (albeit fictional, but meh.. still beautiful nevertheless).

The Goal by Elle Kennedy

— BLURB —

She’s good at achieving her goals…

College senior Sabrina James has her whole future planned out: graduate from college, kick butt in law school, and land a high-paying job at a cutthroat firm. Her path to escaping her shameful past certainly doesn’t include a gorgeous hockey player who believes in love at first sight. One night of sizzling heat and surprising tenderness is all she’s willing to give John Tucker, but sometimes, one night is all it takes for your entire life to change.

But the game just got a whole lot more complicated…

Tucker believes being a team player is as important as being the star. On the ice, he’s fine staying out of the spotlight, but when it comes to becoming a daddy at the age of twenty-two, he refuses to be a bench warmer. It doesn’t hurt that the soon-to-be mother of his child is beautiful, whip-smart, and keeps him on his toes. The problem is, Sabrina’s heart is locked up tight, and the fiery brunette is too stubborn to accept his help. If he wants a life with the woman of his dreams, he’ll have to convince her that some goals can only be made with an assist.

** Each book in the series can technically be read as standalones but I recommend you read them all, in order.

— MY REVIEW —

What a bittersweet ending to one of the most awesome series I’ve been lucky enough to discover! I wish I could rate it a little higher but I just didn’t love it as much as the previous books.

Caution_Spoilers
Tucker has always been the quieter, more mature one from the guys in this series and he stayed true to that in this book. To be honest his story was the least I was looking forward to reading because he was a little more on the serious side, with less humor.. and it just didn’t hold my interest.

Add Sabrina James into the mix (she was introduced in Dean’s book; The Score as his arch nemesis) and you’ve got me dragging my feet. #sorrynotsorry

I wasn’t a fan of Sabrina.. and honestly anyone who dislikes Dean (aka perfection!) as much as she did isn’t getting any support from me. I thought she was annoying. I was actually waiting for the moment where she would snap out of it and win me over but it never happened.

Ironically though, I agree with her when she kept thinking to herself the Tucker deserved better and that she’s ruining his life by altering it with the bombshell of getting knocked up with his baby. Uuck. But what can you do?! Tuck was head over heels in love with her and well…love is blind. LOL.

And although this was supposed to be Tucker’s story, it felt like I was reading more about Sabrina and her shitty life. Thank goodness for her two cool besties, the cameos of the couples from the previous books and the little snippets of what was to come in the spinoff series, or I would’ve taken a lot longer to finish this.

There was way too many annoying characters in this book which was a shocker considering in all three previous books I loved all the characters and found none needed an ass-whooping. But with this.. I could name who would be in my throat-punch list.

Annnnd… here they are:

  • Sabrina (Grrrr!)
  • Sabrina’s grandmother — *sigh* I have no words
  • Ray aka Sabrina’s stepfather (ewwww….)
  • Tucker’s’ Mom (like WTF, lady!?)
  • Professor Fromm (pfffft..um. ok) *rolls eyes*
  • Kale aka “Lettuce Head” — he was a very minor character but damn, I felt like breaking his nose!

EmmaSwan_ComeOn

OK.. *exhales* Time to get into the good, positive bits of this book.. Tucker 😉 I tell ya, I may dislike his mom but she did raise one helluva man! Besides his hotness – He has manners. He’s smart. He’s caring. Awesome, supportive friend. Totally stepped up when it came to responsibility (and I actually think he enjoyed it). Sabrina definitely hit the jackpot with that one!

In comparison to the previous books, I didn’t find this one as fast paced. I actually took several breaks from reading it because I couldn’t sit still for than a few chapters at a time.. whilst with the others I practically sacrificed sleep coz I couldn’t put them down.

There was less humor (but like I said earlier, Tucker was the more serious from the bunch), and Sabrina was the no-nonsense gal. There was also fewer mentions of hockey in this one but quite understandable because it was their last year at Briar University, they had a shitty hockey year and therefore it was redundant to keep up with any mentions of it because they weren’t playing. So their story concentrated more on the romance side and dealing with family, and their future outside of school and hockey.

All in all, not my fave but no regrets whatsoever in reading it. I got to clue in a bit more about what the first book in the spinoff series (Briar U) and had me excited to start Fitzy’s story, and seeing the new bunch of characters who’ll be taking over.

He knows how to score, on and off the ice.

Allie Hayes is in crisis mode. With graduation looming, she still doesn’t have the first clue about what she’s going to do after college. To make matters worse, she’s nursing a broken heart thanks to the end of her longtime relationship. Wild rebound sex is definitely not the solution to her problems, but gorgeous hockey star Dean Di Laurentis is impossible to resist. Just once, though, because even if her future is uncertain, it sure as heck won’t include the king of one-night stands.

It’ll take more than flashy moves to win her over.

Dean always gets what he wants. Girls, grades, girls, recognition, girls…he’s a ladies man, all right, and he’s yet to meet a woman who’s immune to his charms. Until Allie. For one night, the feisty blonde rocked his entire world—and now she wants to be friends? Nope. It’s not over until he says it’s over. Dean is in full-on pursuit, but when life-rocking changes strike, he starts to wonder if maybe it’s time to stop focusing on scoring…and shoot for love.

— MY REVIEW —

Ahhhhhh! Dean is officially MY. FAVE. PLAYER. from this series!

Dean_SmileAndWink

I would’ve given this one full ratings just like the first book buuuut this one didn’t have an epilogue and I desperately needed one! Or at least a longer final chapter. And I know the timelines for each book all correspond with another and maybe that’s the reason why Dean’s story didn’t get an epilogue but it just felt a little unfinished.

But besides the fact that I loveee this damn book so much! Dean and Allie are such a perfect pair..and once again as individual characters..they didn’t suck one bit. So I think it’s safe to say Elle Kennedy is now my number one fave rom-com author who can create characters I don’t want to choke with my bare hands. Yipee!

This is the third book in the Off-Campus series and after having read all three back to back I can now pinpoint which way the stories are heading. I saw it about halfway through in The Mistake and I saw about a quarter way through in this one. Sometimes when a book gets predictable it can be off-putting to finish it, or not as excited to finish it — well that was no way the case with these books. There’s something about Elle’s writing style that keeps your attention (predictability or not) from start to finish.

Another amazing awe-inspiring couple in the series and another enjoyable storyline. There was no doubt that this book had the same amount of banter, flirtatiousness and humor as it’s predecessors but this one had such heartbreak. Head up if you haven’t read this one yet…have tissues nearby. You may need them. I know I did! (I’m still in a state of denial and I admit there was a moment where I was thinking “Why Elle, whhhhhy?!?!”) But I guess that’s a good sign that I’m emotionally and mentally invested in the story and the characters, huh?

emma_thebest

Two thumbs up! An effortless read that will have you laughing. It’ll cure any reading slump or shitty day. Dean is the best. As a friend mentioned to me when I said Dean was my fave — everyone loves a (reformed) bad boy..

Lol. I don’t know about that. But I, for one do prefer the troublesome, alpha, not-so-squeaky clean characters.. *ahem ahem*

Amazing series. A must read. End of!

— BLURB —

He’s a player in more ways than one…

College junior John Logan can get any girl he wants. For this hockey star, life is a parade of parties and hook-ups, but behind his killer grins and easygoing charm, he hides growing despair about the dead-end road he’ll be forced to walk after graduation. A sexy encounter with freshman Grace Ivers is just the distraction he needs, but when a thoughtless mistake pushes her away, Logan plans to spend his final year proving to her that he’s worth a second chance.

Now he’s going to need to up his game…

After a less than stellar freshman year, Grace is back at Briar University, older, wiser, and so over the arrogant hockey player she nearly handed her V-card to. She’s not a charity case, and she’s not the quiet butterfly she was when they first hooked up. If Logan expects her to roll over and beg like all his other puck bunnies, he can think again. He wants her back? He’ll have to work for it. This time around, she’ll be the one in the driver’s seat…and she plans on driving him wild.

OK. Without further ado.. Read on for my thoughts on this hotness of a read! 🙂

Lets_Do_This

— MY REVIEW —

Ahhh yes another fun and addictive read! I don’t know how I could’ve not known about Elle Kennedy until now. This is only book two in the Off-Campus series and it’s already become one of my fave contemporary romance series’. This is also my second book EVER by Elle and I’m already addicted enough to her style of writing that I’m already looking at her other books.

Now. This is Logan’s story. When I was reading The Deal (book 1) and Logan was introduced as Garrett’s best friend, I was immediately interested in what his deal was, so you can bet I was excited for this one 🙂

It didn’t disappoint. It had the same type of humor, banter and swoony romance as its predecessor.

The only reason why I didn’t give this one full ratings is because I found the issues that Logan was dealing with throughout the book was resolved too abruptly and within the last couple of chapters for that matter. In opinion the conclusion was rushed; considering he was going through these family problems the entire time with the same resolve – where he felt he had no choice in the matter and that was that. Then all of a sudden a convenient solution pops up and bam it’s all fixed.. and just in time for the story to wrap up between Logan and Grace, and his final year in college. Hm.

But other than that I loved reading it! Logan was as swoony as ever. And Grace is another female protagonist I can add to my non-annoying-don’t-want-to-throat-punch list! Yaaaay! She’s now right alongside Hannah.

I tell ya.. if Elle keeps up with these awesome, smart, relatable, independent female characters who don’t go all out bimbo the second a sexy male comes along then I’ll have no choice but to keep up with all the happy-chappy words in my reviews for the rest of the books!

I love the pace. I say this about the first book too in this series. There’s not a single dull, boring part in these books. Besides the oh-so drool worthy romance, humor and banter between the characters – there’s actually a very well written plot that keeps you flipping those pages to see what happens next.

So… If you like the following then I suggest you give this one a try:

  • NA Contemporary
  • Sports Romance
  • Books set in school
  • Banter
  • Detailed (but tasteful) sex scenes
  • Awesome friendships

Please note, I am adding a possible trigger warning for this book. Alcohol abuse (alcoholism) and the effects of it is present. If this is a sensitive subject for you, I suggest skipping this one.

She’s about to make a deal with the college bad boy…

Hannah Wells has finally found someone who turns her on. But while she might be confident in every other area of her life, she’s carting around a full set of baggage when it comes to sex and seduction. If she wants to get her crush’s attention, she’ll have to step out of her comfort zone and make him take notice… even if it means tutoring the annoying, childish, cocky captain of the hockey team in exchange for a pretend date.

…and it’s going to be oh so good.

All Garrett Graham has ever wanted is to play professional hockey after graduation, but his plummeting GPA is threatening everything he’s worked so hard for. If helping a sarcastic brunette make another guy jealous will help him secure his position on the team, he’s all for it. But when one unexpected kiss leads to the wildest sex of both their lives, it doesn’t take long for Garrett to realize that pretend isn’t going to cut it. Now he just has to convince Hannah that the man she wants looks a lot like him.

— MY REVIEW —

Couldn’t fault it! Enjoyed every second of this book. If I didn’t need sleep I would’ve read it in one night. I can’t believe I didn’t read it sooner when I’d had it on my kindle for months.

Heidi_Perfection

A New Adult, contemporary sports romance and it checked all the boxes for me.

– The characters. Well written, developed and most importantly mature thinking adults. For characters who are 20/ 21 years old, there was no annoying, immature mentality when it came down to the nitty gritty.. which was soooo refreshing to see from a NA novel.

– The serious matters. The leads; Hannah and Garrett both have very serious traumatic pasts. There’s dealings of rape, and physical, mental and verbal abuse. Reading this scenes (although heartbreaking) wasn’t too graphically detailed that tend to put some readers off. I also love the fact that both Hannah and Garrett (especially Hannah for me) were strong characters. They didn’t want their pasts to dictate their futures or ruin what dreams they may have for their lives.

– The humor. Big part of why I flew through this book. There was just the right amount of humor in just the right places throughout the story to break tension and to keep it from getting too serious and deep in the issues the characters were dealing with.

– The romance. On point. Garrett may have been a guy who liked to hook up, have fun and was not at all interested in a serious relationship but he was no jerk either (at least not intentionally) towards the women. He’s your stereotypical jock persona on the outside but who’s really sweetheart once you get to know him.. Which Hannah did. The connection between these two even before they became friends was siiiizzling! I love a good banter. LOL.

– The friendships. There were quite a few different friendships going on here but all were amazing. They added more to the story rather than take anything away from the main characters. It’s rare for me to actually love ALL the characters (there’s usually at least one friend who I find craps and ruins things) but amazingly not a single one here!

And finally – the sports to romance ratio. This is a sports romance (specifically college ice hockey). I haven’t read a lot of sports romance but the majority of the ones I’ve read I found the sporting aspect were little to non-existent.. (a few mentions here and there but no real details), and whilst this was not overly heavy on the sports part either, it did have plenty to make you see that Garrett and his friends (who are also his team mates) are very much into hockey.

Like I said earlier – all boxes checked and I couldn’t fault it 🙂 In fact I enjoyed this one so much that I’d downloaded the other 3 books in this series and plan to read them back to back asap!

So, it’s safe to say I would recommend this to all fans of contemporary romance, who don’t mind a smidge of sports in it. Even if this book is technically NA it can absolutely be read and enjoyed by those not in the NA age group ;-p (Hey. I’m not, and I did!)

I should mention before I end this review that be aware there is a serious trigger related issue (sexual abuse) in this book. Not at all graphic. In my opinion, Elle wrote it in a way were it sheds light, gives more awareness, and gives the courage to openly speak about it. But nevertheless, I wanted to give a warning.

This book was beautifully written and well balanced. Character development and story building was on point. I loved every minute of reading it.
