Sasha Nikolaev.

The unhinged mobster.

Satan’s spawn with pale blue eyes.

I made him a promise years ago. Granted, I only made it so he’d kiss me. But it was a promise made nonetheless. So I waited.

And waited some more.

He never came back to collect. So I moved on.

Never would I have ever thought I’d see him the day I walked down the aisle.

Except there he was, waiting for me in the pews.

Sasha Nikolaev.

When he snatched me in the middle of the ceremony, for the whole world to see, shit hit the fan.

He claimed I had a debt to pay.

My family promised retribution. My fiancé did the same.

And now, nothing will ever be the same.

“Baby, your initials have been carved into my heart for a long time.”

KathMc_SaddenedLook

Sasha is a crazy, hella entertaining mofo and this story mirrored his character to a T! 🙌 He first caught my attention when I came across him in a series crossover (Kingpins Of The Syndicate). His cheeky and protective, yet somewhat unhinged personality had me curious to know more about his story.

This book was no holds barred. It had a gritty atmosphere from start to finish that set the entire mood as you delve into both Sasha and Branka’s entire history. It’s not for the fainthearted, with constant fear, brutality, and danger in the air.

Please note, it contains sensitive content that may be triggering for some readers such as, domestic abuse, child abuse, graphic violence, suicide, rape, drug use, and psychological torment— all resulting in one form or another of PTSD. It has dark themes and strong sexual content. It’s intended for readers 18+ only.

Sasha has three main elements within its story— familial dynamics, violence, and BDSM romance. The first two I’m accustomed to with the copious amounts of dark/ mafia and romantic suspense books I read. The latter not so much. BDSM is not in my usual wheelhouse of romance tropes and elements. I have nothing against this element, it’s just not for me, but in saying that and after seeing snippets of Sasha in previous books of Belles & Mobsters (and in the Kingpins Of The Syndicate series), Sasha wouldn’t be Sasha without some eroticism and kinky bedroom play. 🤷‍♀️😅

The world-building is vivid and extensive, and whilst it can technically be read as a standalone novel, the entire series is interconnected through its characters and the relationships they’ve formed. I recommend you start from the beginning to get the full experience of the Belles & Mobsters underworld and the connections amongst each family and territory.

Whilst I’m not completely up to snuff with this series yet, I have read enough of the books to see similarities within each one. All are relatively steady-paced storytelling. I do see occasional repetitiveness or previously mentioned details circle back around. This book is no different and a contributing factor to it being a little wordy. Although both Sasha and Branka’s backstories were both haunting and heart-wrenching to learn about, I metaphorically grasped the pages (of my ebook) whenever they interacted as their relationship was somewhat of cruel slow burn.

It’s a character-driven story full of sadness, anger, and retribution that gradually morphs into one of strength, healing, and happiness. Sasha and Branka are complex, damaged characters with their own ghosts and insecurities. Their character growth was interesting to see throughout and although there’s an age difference between the two it didn’t necessarily come across in their dynamic. Whilst they do have an unconventional relationship, it does work for them.

All in all, Sasha did not disappoint. He exceeded my expectations and then some! 😜 He’s a total alpha-hole and his lunacy will have your jaw-dropping in shock but in a good way. Sasha’s fierceness and all-guns-blazing attitude in achieving his HEA with Branka is a prime example of a possessive mobster in an all-out dark, mafia romance story! Sasha has intrigued me for the longest time, and after having read his story I’m left in happy contentment. His book is another great addition to the series, and now I can look forward to reading the next one.

After five books the cast of characters is vast and connections are more complex than ever, but rest assured once you settle in, juggling all the relationships and family trees will be a piece of cake. It’s not to be missed for readers who’ve been following the Belles & Mobsters series. I think fans of dark, mafia romance books will get a kick out of this one. It has equal parts romance and mafia elements. You can also look forward to seeing strong bonds and a contrast of personalities. It’s twisty, at times comical, and an all-around wild ride!

Holy is his road name, but there is nothing saintly about him.

Holy

What started as a simple assignment became an obsession.

Hazel’s my Prez’s niece. He tasked me with tracking her down. Falling for her was never part of the plan. I’m not taking no for an answer. She will be mine. If I have to kidnap her to prove my point I will. She belongs to me.

Hazel

I’ve always been on my own. Nowhere to call home. No family to call my own. I don’t answer to anyone. Especially not a bossy biker who claims my family ordered him to find me.

Refusing him was mistake number one. Number two was attempting to seduce my way out of the situation.

I’ve been taken by the biker, but I don’t know if I want him to let me go.

Taken By The Biker is book 6 of the Charleston, WV chapter of Royal Bastards MC. This book can be read as a standalone though for best enjoyment, the series  should be read in order.

• MY REVIEW •

After reading Glenna’s dedication at the very beginning of this book, I knew I’d gotten a teasing heads-up on what Holy’s and Hazel’s story would entail. 😳🤭 I had read the previous books in this series and already had an idea but finally reading their story from their points of view was an eye-opening and gripping experience!

Biker_CoupleRideBW2

I’m not a huge fan of BDSM in my romance reads, but their story caught my attention right from the get-go that I realized fairly early on that the BDSM elements not only heightened Holy’s unique character but his bond with Hazel as well. And I admit, it does give an edgier dynamic and contrast to the MC having a couple who’s a little more on the wild side. 😜

To cut to the chase, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. It’s another amazing addition to Glenna’s RBMC Charleston Chapter series. Both Hazel and Holy are such likable characters and their history made their relationship all the more genuine to see redevelop. They had quite a tragic past that clearly left lasting effects on both their lives and their mentality. But their strong bond was endearing to see that it wasn’t hard to get completely invested in seeing their journey play out.

It’s suspenseful with such grittiness, but it’s such a hearty storyline. Well-placed lightheartedness and banter throughout kept the overall atmosphere from going too dark but make no mistake this story is heartbreaking, soul-crushing, and at times just downright unfair.

Please note there are sensitive subject matters that may be triggering for some readers, such as violence, sexual harassment, child abuse, domestic abuse, drug abuse, and sexual assault. This book is intended for readers 18+ only.

I’ve always found Glenna’s writing to be consistent and effortless to follow. Whilst the books in this series can technically be read as standalone, I would still recommend you read it in publishing order because the world-building gradually expands with each book, and by this one, you can see how well the brotherhood (and sisterhood) have come since the first book.

There’s a great balance of MC elements and romance. As the story develops, you can see how much both Holy and Hazel open up and take a chance on each other. It’s fast-paced storytelling and things were constantly happening. There were a couple situations where I didn’t completely agree with either Holy’s or Hazel’s decisions, and although this is their second chance, putting aside the romantic aspect of their relationship, in my opinion their reconnection wasn’t as in-depth as I was hoping/ expecting (considering their history). With the pacing, I also felt like the ending was rushed through. Normally I would be more bothered if a story had ended abruptly, but after having read the previous books in this series, I can look past it knowing this won’t be the last we’ll hear of Holy’s and Hazel’s relationship, and that they’re bound to make appearances in future books.

Putting aside their kinky sexual preferences, they’re both relatable characters with realistic insecurities, struggles, and dreams for the future. Holy may have eccentric tastes in the bedroom, but he’s also a caring and loyal person, and a great brother to the rest of the MC. Hazel’s life hasn’t improved much since they were kids and despite it all, she’s never given up hoping for a better life for herself. Glenna created characters who are survivors and fighters, and I was totally convinced.

Overall, it was a satisfying MC romance read. It had all the elements I hoped to see from this romance genre. There’s chemistry between the protagonists, a steady storyline with some plot twists, and after the rollercoaster these two have gone through, a well-deserved HEA. The addition of secondary characters and storylines really amped up the tense atmosphere and added more dimension to the story. I was initially a little hesitant going into this because of the BDSM but I hadn’t expected coming away from it with a new favourite couple from the series! 😊

I highly recommend not only this book but this series as a whole. You get easily absorbed in their world and each story is as unique as the characters in them. Top-notch storytelling!

Mason Hill wants one thing: revenge. When Charlotte Van Kempt walks into his office, all innocence and desperation, he knows the perfect way to get it. He makes a dark bargain. She’ll give him her body to save her family. Little does she know he plans to ruin both.

•••

• MY REVIEW •

After having recently read the prologue, I could not get started on Net Worth fast enough… and it soooo did not disappoint in regards to storyline, character chemistry, and overall flow.

JamesFranco_SoGood

This book gave me twisted Cinderella meets Party of Five meets Fifty Shades vibes. Unusual mix, I know. But once you read it, you’ll hopefully know what I mean. 😅

When Mason’s family was first introduced in the prologue, I didn’t have a strong connection to any of them, but Net Worth gave me a better understanding to their situation and seeing their family dynamic, my impression of them have now somewhat altered. Mason’s siblings all have distinct personalities and all seem to have their own coping mechanisms for dealing with the tragedy that’s surrounded their family— so I’m eager to see how each of their character develops as this story continues.

The introduction of Charlotte in The Proposition, she was instantly the type of heroine I could back due to her sweet disposition, yet determined attitude despite her current standing. Whilst I thought she did lose some of her spunkiness since the prologue, she’s still a likable character. I admit I didn’t agree with all of her decisions and actions throughout this book, but when it comes to Charlotte it’s not hard to look past it and carry-on reading. She’s the light-hearted element within (other than her awesome-sauce of a bestie Elise), that balanced out the sombre atmosphere that usually followed Mason around.

You’ll either love or loathe Mason Hill, or in my case, interchange from loving to loathing and back again all throughout. Seeing the different sides of him whether he’s with his family or with Charlotte was one of the big reasons I ended up emotionally invested.

What immediately struck me in this story was the genuine intrigue and attraction between Mason and Charlotte. There interactions were weirdly addictive to see play out. I honestly didn’t know what to expect each time they were together. I especially wasn’t expecting the slow burn romance despite the fact that almost every interaction had some sort of sexual encounter. I don’t know how Amelia has managed to put some very raunchy exchange, yet still leaves you hanging for more. But she’s done it! 🙈

It’s told from first person, dual points of view, well-paced storytelling, and can be read in one sitting. As the POVs interchange back and forth chapter by chapter, reading from each of their own perspectives, you can see the differences between them and their lives, especially when it came down to the dynamics of their households.

There are quite a few tropes in this story, so if you enjoy any or all of the following in your romance reads, I really recommend you read this one.

  • Billionaire Romance
  • Age-Gap Romance
  • Virgin Heroine
  • Tortured Hero
  • Enemies to Lovers
  • Opposites Attract
  • BDSM

As a romance reader who usually passes up books that include BDSM (just my preference), I was second-guessing whether or not that this particular feature would dampen my reading experience as I hadn’t expected it. But I can honestly say that the minor (and some might say tame) BDSM included didn’t deter me from finishing, and most importantly, from enjoying the book overall.

Amelia Wilde has a unique way of writing her characters and their monologues. If you’ve read enough of her books, you can easily identify her work. If you enjoyed her writing style in the past, I have no doubt you’ll enjoy reading this one just as much. 😊 I’ve always found her writing easy to follow. The setting and world-building are already so vivid and very much present by the first chapter, along with the intrigue of getting to know more about the protagonists.

Net Worth is one seductive start to the Wealth Trilogy. The deal that ultimately started the steamy yet swoon-worthy relationship between Mason and Charlotte had me on the edge of my seat the entire time and desperately needing more of their story. With an air of danger, secrecy, and provocation, there’s tons of build-up and suspense to this billionaire romance. It won’t be for everyone but if you enjoy edgy contemporary romance reads with a side of smut, then give this one a try. It has good bones, with tons of potential. The characters are all promising and definitely add an extra oomph to this meaty, multi-faceted storyline.

Please note, as it is part of a trilogy and a continuous storyline, this book does end on a cliffhanger.

Betraying the most powerful man in New York wasn’t something I ever envisioned when I first started playing games with Winston Constantine. But he’s engaged in far more dangerous games than ours, and his enemies are out for blood.

Winston has my heart, the Morellis have incriminating photos, and I’m left with nothing except three stepbrothers who want to hurt me and a future in doubt. I knew Winston wouldn’t be my prince charming, but that didn’t stop me from falling for him.

After all, the slippers fit, and I let myself believe I’d be dancing with Winston forever.

Until too much truth comes to light.

Until I realize instead of ruling the board, I was just a pawn.

In the end, I have only one question. When his game with me is over, will I be able to pretend as if the glass slipper wasn’t a perfect fit?

PrettyWoman_TowerClimb

Ahhhh! I recently finished reading the third and final book in Webster’s Cinderella trilogy and I am left reeling, feeling giddy-happy, and all around content with how Ash and Winston’s story wrapped up. This book started off strong and kept at it all the way through to the end. There was just so many things happening that it was hard to put down!

This was an action-packed third installment. A lot of things were left up in the air from the second book that I was itching to get to. Same as the previous books in this trilogy, it’s fast-paced storytelling and told in first person, dual points of view. Whilst it took some getting used to with the difference in age between Ash and Winston, I’m happy to say by this third book I was smiling at their dynamics. The cool, calm and collected mature personality of Winston and the youthful, carefree, and teenage rebelliousness of Ash. I’m late to the party, but for some insane reason I finally found their unique, taboo relationship adorable and just so well-suited now. After two books and a steady progression, Ash and Winston have rubbed off on each other and a somewhat balanced-out coupling has formed. The power and say-so is not all up to Winston anymore. Ash is finally getting some of her input and Winston is all but happy to entertain her wants and needs.

PrettyWoman_RescuedHer

👋 So long to the cold-hearted façade towards Ash… (and to be honest it’s made him more personable in my eyes). You can see his transformation. The guy did not stand a chance against Ash’s drive and determination! 🤭 She’s opened him up emotionally and gave him something else to focus his time on other than the Constantine empire and who to destroy next.

The only reason why I didn’t give it full ratings is whilst it was a great ending to their story, the book itself felt a little rushed towards the end. There were a few roadblocks that Ash and Winston were trying to get through in the previous books that continued onto this one, yet they were all resolved relatively quickly in what seemed like in one fell swoop. You’re still trying to wrap your head around everything and next thing you know it’s already reached the end. It just seemed like a swift conclusion to all their problems before you get to the swoon-worthy happily ever after.

But in saying that, The Glass Slipper is my favourite from all three books. Overall, it was an absolute treat to read this trilogy. It’s definitely a different take on the classic tale of Cinderella, and it stands out from all other fairy tale retellings I’ve read in the past due to Webster’s distinctly twisted style of storytelling. Who would have thought Cinderella in this version is a maid highly paid to participate in indecent sexual acts that’s considered degrading, cruel, and oh-so taboo with the much older, uber rich, and unbelievably powerful “Prince Charming”?! It’s a total adult-rated fairy tale story!

  • Age Gap Romance
  • Billionaire Romance
  • Contemporary
  • Light BDSM
  • Opposites Attract

PrettyWoman_RescuesHim

This story has a nice balance of light and shade. Whilst Ash’s and Winston’s story was cast in gloominess the majority of the time, there were still plenty of playful and upbeat moments weaved throughout from keeping it going too dark. Putting aside their quirky relationship, there’s also plenty of secondary characters that assisted in making this book more than a simple love story between two people from opposite worlds.

There’s no slowing down the drama, the copious amounts of devious characters, and dirty dealings going on in their world. I liked how easily the atmosphere changed depending on whichever character was presently in the forefront—whether it was a member of the Constantine family, or Ash’s family, or even those who worked for Winston, you can automatically sense the change in air… which I truly think has a lot to do with the fact that Webster created such lavish world-building that constantly keeps you intrigued.

This is only one story set in the world of the Midnight Dynasty. But I can only hope certain characters (those who don’t already have their own series) who’ve made appearances in this trilogy will eventually get their own book too… *cough* Perry *cough* 😜😉 (More details on the Midnight Dynasty below!)

And I have to say if you’ve read the other books in the Midnight Dynasty then you might agree with me that a certain Constantine has been shown in a slightly different light in these books. I actually liked the fact that in this particular case, this Constantine was shown to have a softer, more human side because they certainly were portrayed to be more ruthless in the other ones.

After reading the first two books, you’ll see how far Ash and Winston have come since their first encounter. It started out initially as a business transaction that turned into so much more. They are wrapped up in each other, and seeing how their story concludes was so satisfying. Team Constantine! ✊ These books introduced me to Webster and I’m looking forward to reading more of her work.

What can you expect from this book? Hot and heavy bedroom romps, declaration of love, suspense, plot twists, and ever-constant banter! A must read for dark romance readers and fans of dark fairy tales.

Winston Constantine is no prince charming…

I crave him so badly I think I might be losing my mind. He’s right in front of me, but he’s just as remote as my dreams of getting away from my stepbrothers. I keep playing his twisted games, and I want to stay just as distant as he is. But I can’t. I never could. I’ve fallen for him. Hopelessly. Irrevocably.

But Winston isn’t a lover, he’s a business venture.

A way for me to pay for college.

A ticket out.

He’s never pretended to be anything other than that.

I can’t blame him for making me fall in love.

There can be no happily ever after between a maid and a prince, no matter what the stories say.

PrettyWoman_HeartEyes

“I’m the villain and my story doesn’t end with a carriage ride into the sunset.”

Okay. Okay. With the first book (Stroke of Midnight) I was a little skeptical, a little unsure if it was a book I could truly like or not… but after having read the second book? Yeah, I’m sold that yes this book is one hell of an acquired taste but hot damn not only did I binge read it, enjoyed it, but now I’m anticipating the conclusion to the series! Eeep! 🙉

I can undoubtedly say the I am invested in Ash and Winston’s twistedly cruel, yet somehow endearing screwed-up relationship. The constant banter between not only the two of them but with the rest of the Constantine siblings (especially Perry) had me chuckling to myself all throughout (and getting weird side-glances from people as they notice me smiling to myself). 😅

It certainly has a great balance of that light-hearted banter and uplifting moments to the darker, unsettling scenes that occur. As with the first book, this one has sensitive subject matter that may be triggering to some readers. Please be aware that bullying, attempted sexual and physical assault are present.

When I’m not smiling like a loon, I found myself holding my breath at times. Webster has brilliantly set the mood and atmosphere with every scene, making you feel like you’re right there alongside the characters. The build-up, the intensity of some situations had me digging my nails into my palms. It’s one of those stories where you know the pin is eventually going to drop but even though it does, it still takes you aback like you didn’t see it coming… *shakes head* 😲🙈

Such a juicy, entertaining continuance from Stroke of Midnight. It continues right from where it ended and goes straight to Ash and Winston’s full-out complicated kinky relationship. You must read the first book in order to read this one because the series is one whole continuous storyline. With the first book, Ash and Winston were still finding their groove and testing each other’s limits. In this one… they are completely comfortable in each other’s space and have fallen into somewhat of a routine.

As the title has most likely given it away, this book focuses more so on the anti-hero, anti-prince-charming himself, Winston Constantine. Whilst we get both protagonists’ points of view, Winston’s is ultimately what I got hooked onto seeing develop. He’s a businessman — powerful, intimidating, and always get his way. But the more he spends time with Ash, the more his second-guessing his feelings for her.

It’s an interesting contrast to Ash’s young, open book, and usually light-hearted personality. She’s a bubbly teenager, but she also has determination and backbone.

PrettyWoman_Fairytale

Besides the whole kinky, BDSM erotica weaved throughout this story (which I don’t usually go for in my romance reads), I can’t say an age-gap romance trope is another element I read a lot of. But in saying that, this book (and this entire series in general) has become an exception. I’m not familiar enough with Webster’s writing style, as she’s still a relatively new-to-me author, but based on the two books I’ve read, both of which are from this series, I can say her storytelling is easy to follow, the world-building creative, and the characters are intriguing. These books may be considered guilty pleasure reads, but there not at all fluff. There some depth and progression throughout the story and with the characters.

I adored the push and pull between Ash and Winston, and seeing them battling with their inner monologue. It reminds me somewhat of a soap opera with all the constant drama surrounding the Constantines and the amount of trouble that seems to pop up at every turn. But there are certain situations that are very much relatable that you can’t help but feel emotional about.

The secondary characters in this book are on point! Whether they’re fun-loving, goodhearted heroes, or vile, disturbingly sick villains… they definitely added layers to this modern fairy tale. You’ll either be giggling, or be in a murderous mood. And for those who cry easily like I do, you may just surprisingly get teary-eyed too. Who knows?! Besides the romance, there’s strong familial plot points as well. You get an insight to the Constantine family dynamics, as well as Ash’s one with her father, step monster mother, and (ugh barf!) step-brothers.

Whilst I overall found myself needing to know what happens next. I did get inklings to certain characters and situations that I’m predicting will play out in the third and final book. I don’t want to blurt out names and spoil it for you guys wanting to read this, but a certain friend is looking awfully dodgy that I’m keeping my eyes peeled! *narrows eyes* 🤔

If you love the classic tale of Cinderella told in a dirty, raunchy retelling — that I wouldn’t recommend reading out in public, then you have got to read this one! If you haven’t read Stroke of Midnight, start with that one first. Grab some good grub and some booze, and discover the world of the Constantine family, of secrecy, deception, and devious plotting.

A dark, contemporary romance that’ll have you reading until the wee hours!

Money can buy anything. And anyone. As the head of the Constantine family, I’m used to people bowing to my will. Cruel, rigid, unyielding—I’m all those things. When I discover the one woman who doesn’t wither under my gaze, but instead smiles right back at me, I’m intrigued.

Ash Elliott needs cash, and I make her trade in crudeness and degradation for it. I crave her tears, her moans. I pay for each one. And every time, she comes back for more. When she challenges me with an offer of her own, I have to decide if I’m willing to give her far more than cold hard cash.

But love can have deadly consequences when it comes from a Constantine. At the stroke of midnight, that choice may be lost for both of us.

— MY REVIEW —

PrettyWoman_Cinderella

What’s better than a fairytale inspired story or retelling? A dark fairytale story or retelling! The fact that Stroke of Midnight is a Cinderella story, just had me even more excited to read it! 😊

But I hadn’t encountered a lot of things when I started this book. The blurb certainly tells you a loose outline, but soon discovered it was so much more that what I was expecting. I think this book will be eaten up by romance readers who love some kinky BDSM in their reads.

I’m an avid romance reader but I have to admit romance books that contain BDSM are usually ones I steer clear of because they’re not my type of story. But I would never discredit these books, authors who write them, or the readers who enjoy them. To each their own.

PrettyWoman_PianoScene

I have to point out that there’s also a relatively sizable age gap between our protagonists. It’s a trope I’m slowly reading a lot more of these days but even then I tend to be picky about which ones I read. I find that if the age difference isn’t as noticeable when the characters converse, then it’s not going to be an issue. With Stroke of Midnight, the age difference is practically one of the focal points in the story. If it’s not mentioned by the characters themselves, it’s displayed in the way they behave towards one another. It’s a bit of a hit and miss for me because it was either funny to witness or at times a cringy reminder. 🙈

For someone like me who’s just venturing towards this romance trope, I was taken aback in the beginning, but the further I read on, it became the norm with Winston and Ash that I eventually shrugged it off and accepted it. Although I may have huffed at the fact that being in your thirties is considered “old”. But I suppose when the heroine is still a teenager then yeah… I can see why it may seem old in comparison. Lol. 🤦‍♀️😂

If you like the following themes in your romance books, then you’ll be sure to enjoy this one!

  • Age gap
  • Erotica/ BDSM
  • Office Romance
  • Dark fairy tale retelling
  • The whole sugar daddy kink!

In saying all that — I did surprisingly find this book entertaining to read. I was hooked on the aspect of the whole Pretty Woman, make-me-an-offer bit, which I think is initially what kept me engaged… that, and the fact that I enjoyed seeing Winston and Ash’s nonstop bantering. It kept me chuckling and turning the pages!

“He’s a villain who looks the part of a golden prince.”

PrettyWoman_TryMe

I’m not going to lie, I had trouble deciding what to rate it. I have a love/ hate relationship with this book. As I mentioned earlier, this is not my usual type of romance read. I know there’s a massive fanbase for this romance trope. Based on some similar ones I have come across (and DNFed) in the past, this one managed to have a lightness added to an otherwise dark romance.

But before I go further, I have to mention it contains sensitive subject matter that may be triggering for some readers. It contains violence, sexual harassment and assault. So please keep that in mind when deciding to start this novel.

Another issue I have to bring up is that it ends on a cliffhanger. It’s not a deal breaker for me, but I know plenty of readers who have issues with it considering it’s not mentioned at all in the blurb (which would’ve been nice). Unless you specifically check on Goodreads, you won’t know that it’s not a standalone until you’re already well into reading it. Sigh.

K. Webster is a new-to-me author, so I had no idea what her writing style would be like. Despite the romance tropes in this book, I did get invested in seeing how things would pan out for Winston and Ash (especially with how things concluded), so I’m looking forward to the next book!

It’s a relatively well-paced storytelling and told from both their POVs. A definite modern, twisted take on the classic fairy tale.

A handful of shifty secondary characters to look forward to. The villainous stepmother and her disturbingly cruel spawns is just the start of it. But there’s also some cool characters included to keep the scale from tipping entirely to the evil side. Hehe.

Winston and Ash, as weird as their relationship is, do have zingy chemistry. Their conversations more than anything is what I enjoyed reading the most. For the majority of the time I wasn’t a fan of Ash’s immature personality and naivety, but it does display a dynamic between Winston and herself… and she is a stereotypical teenager so… 🤷‍♀️

*whispers* I would’ve rated this book a little higher if Ash’s actions didn’t bother me as much. Her heart is in a good place and she has clear opinions but her decisions don’t necessarily reflect that.

Successful, powerful Winston has the world at his feet, but I also questioned his decisions when it came to Ash’s welfare. He just didn’t make a big enough impact on me as the guy you don’t want to mess with. Know what I mean?

I can only hope the sequel we’ll get to really see his full potential as a Constantine, and see a lot more growth from Ash. There’s so much potential and possibilities with their story.

I’m a sucker for fairy tale stories where the hero is so affected by the heroine that he gradually changes from the cold-hearted man into one full of love and emotion. Winston and Ash have that potential of a love story.

PrettyWoman_TreatYouSoNice

In my honest opinion Stroke of Midnight would be an absolute smash for readers who like these specific types of romance stories. I can totally see its appeal. It’s not my usual preference but I did end up liking it for the most part and I would recommend it to readers looking into this romance sub-genre.  A nice quick read you can finish in one sitting too! 😊

RATING: ♥♥♥¾

Thank you to K. Webster and Candi Kane PR for the opportunity to read an advanced copy! 💙

Lucian

A life free from sin.

For seventeen years, I have lived and breathed those words. But there is no balm to the war inside my soul.

Until her.

The mysterious beauty too lethal to taste. She’s a thief, a con, the essence of everything I loathe. Still, she lures me in with her lying eyes.

In the dark of night, she came to confess her sins, and in the light of morning, I plotted to steal her away.

She will be my ruination. My damnation. My biggest regret.

So help me, God.

**
Gypsy

A word of advice? Don’t show me your vulnerabilities because I will find a way to exploit them. I learned the hard way to take what I want from life with no regrets.

Until him.

He’s one of the most hated men in America. A soulless criminal attorney. A recluse. And as of five minutes ago, my new husband.

He wants to keep my secrets and collect my tears, but he should know that a wild animal can’t be domesticated.

I don’t know how to love men. I only know how to leave them.

With everything I want.

• MY REVIEW •

Before I start my review, I just have to say Ashleigh was one of the first authors I discovered when I started reading ebooks. Her Boston Underworld series is one of my all time faves and has basically cemented her as one of my auto-buy authors!

I’ve had Confess on my TBR for quite a while now and the only reason why I haven’t read it until now is because of two main reasons:

1) It was part of a series. I HATE waiting for sequels! So I try and wait until closer to release day of the next book – IF I can help it.

and,

2) I had read some reviews, and it pretty much coincided with my thoughts on waiting for the sequel. The amount of reviews I’d read that mentioned ‘hangovers’, ‘all the feels’, and ‘wanting the next book like right now’ had me saying, “Nope. I’m gonna wait it out.”

Annnnnd boy did I. But you know what? I think it was well worth it! Because what I’m about to say in this review will show you why. So, hope you enjoy! 😊

⚠ WARNING WARNING WARNING ⚠

Read at own risk!

Caution_Spoilers

Let’s start with my first thoughts. Hmm. For the most part the thing that I was thinking for the majority of the book was…. wait for it….

Confusion!

But in a good way (trust me!) Reading Confess had me lost in the story. I was always questioning what was going to happen next and it resulted in me having great difficulty in wanting to stop for food.. or sleep.. or heck even take a bathroom break.

First impressions of Lucian:

Old.. well older. Kind of a jerk. Acts very fatherly (which is both confusing and disturbing at the time, considering things will develop romantically with Gypsy later). Lol… oh gosh. And WTF with all the health food?!

PrettyWoman_TryMe

First impressions of Gypsy:

Overly-confident (she’s a con artist, so that’s no surprise). Defiant. A bit bratty. A bit snooty (but she’s also young so…) And hilarious. Her reactions to some of the things Lucian says and does but can’t do anything about had me chucklin’… bad!

Girly_Tantrum

What I also noticed whilst reading this one, is it’s not at all like Ashleigh’s books in the Boston Underworld, or even her two short novellas; Defying the Boss and Unwrapping Mr. King (both of which I loved). For me, it felt like at times like a completely different author had written it — and that’s saying something about Ashleigh’s talent as a writer. I’ll admit I haven’t read all of her books yet but with the ones I had.. I can tell you there’s definitely a variety in her books. You won’t be thinking her storylines or her characters are all too similar that it ends up feeling repetitive. Uh-uh.

In this case, I found Gypsy and Lucian to be such secretive individuals almost upto the end of the book that I was getting to the point where I started feeling frustration. But before I could even grumble at what I’m reading.. a little piece of what they’re hiding gets revealed. Just enough to keep me wanting more, and wanting to get to the bottom of everything. LOL.

Ahhh. Well played, Zavarelli. Well played!

[Side Note: But before I move on. I have to mention this little tidbit…

When it comes to reading dark romances, or romance books in general – there’s one thing I’m not a fan of and if I can help it.. will never read. And if the story starts showing signs that it may lead in that direction, then 99% of the time I will DNF it.

I don’t read books that include BDSM. No offense to those who are fans of books that have them. It’s just my own preference. It doesn’t tickle my fancy and I usually just avoid them altogether.]

Why am I mentioning this, you say?

Well.. it’s because BDSM is present in Confess. Now. I did say earlier that I do usually DNF a book if that pops up but the reason why I didn’t with this one is for two reasons (haha yes, again with the reasons).

Firstly: Because of Gypsy. She made me continue reading due to her thoughts on the topic and with her feelings for Lucian, and just knowing that she just wasn’t the type.

Were there BDSM scenes? Yes. But for someone like me who’s not a fan, in this case it was fairly mild and tolerable and it felt like a blip when you look at the overall storyline.

Secondly: Because of Ashleigh. After reading Ghost and Thief from the Boston Underworld series I could already get a sense that the scenes from Confess would be on a similar kind of level, where it pushes the limits but doesn’t go over. If that makes any sense at all.. *nervous laughter* But I have so much trust in Ashleigh.

I also have a teeny tiny thing about large age gaps between a couple. With Lucian being forty and Gypsy being twenty-three. That’s a seventeen year difference. I admit it took awhile for me to get comfortable with their blossoming relationship. In the end I just thought of them like Edward and Vivian from Pretty Woman. Hehe. (It was either that, or not think about their ages at all – which was a bit hard considering a reminder was always around the corner).

*exhales*

Tangled_So

Let’s get onto the bit that had me completely and utterly undone. And THE biggest reason as to why I think the wait to read Confess just before Convict is released was worth it.

*sigh*

You know what I hate that authors we love do so well?

They kill off characters. Beloved characters, mind you. And we’re left in mourning along with the the rest who are left behind to keep living in that world.

I. HAVE. NOT. UGLY CRIED. IN. SO. FUCKING. LONG!!

That is.. until Confess! I kid you not. The tears would not stop. It was a damn floodgate! I could barely keep reading my eyes were so blurry and watery and puffy. Head ups! Don’t read this book in public unless you want to look like an emotional, crazy mess! B’cos I can guarantee people will be moving away from you on your train commute to work. LOL!

Lilo_Leave_Me_Alone

Gypsy gutted me. Lucian crushed me. Ugh.. Ashleigh you’ve killed me with this one! I’m dead. I died. I’m dead. I seriously did not see it coming. It was unexpected, heartbreaking and left me feeling like things were forever going to be unresolved.

This is one spoiler I won’t be spilling for you folks. You’re just gonna have to read it for yourself and experience that ugly cry! I will tell you that there’s no doubt that this book had plot twists and lots of secrets!

But the way it all ended, it had me reaaaally wanting the next book. As much as I enjoyed Confess, I’m excited for the next story.

I should warn you folks who haven’t read it but interested in doing so that this book contains trigger warnings – mental abuse, sexual abuse, violence and suicide are present.

Overall, this was a very well executed story. It keeps you on edge and in suspense, and gives little bits at a time just enough to ensure these characters are always piquing your interest (and that’s including the side characters like Birdie, Ace, Luna and Cristian), and the mysteries surrounding them. I can completely relate with my fellow readers in wanting the next book asap! But all I can say is thank goodness I won’t have to wait long for it! 😛

Read it! Read it, read it read it. But don’t forget the tissues!
