Crown Of Midnight by Sarah J. Maas

“A line that should never be crossed is about to be breached.

It puts this entire castle in jeopardy—and the life of your friend.”

From the throne of glass rules a king with a fist of iron and a soul as black as pitch. Assassin Celaena Sardothien won a brutal contest to become his Champion. Yet Celaena is far from loyal to the crown. She hides her secret vigilantly; she knows that the man she serves is bent on evil.

Keeping up the deadly charade becomes increasingly difficult when Celaena realizes she is not the only one seeking justice. As she tries to untangle the mysteries buried deep within the glass castle, her closest relationships suffer. It seems no one is above questioning her allegiances—not the Crown Prince Dorian; not Chaol, the Captain of the Guard; not even her best friend, Nehemia, a foreign princess with a rebel heart.

Then one terrible night, the secrets they have all been keeping lead to an unspeakable tragedy. As Celaena’s world shatters, she will be forced to give up the very thing most precious to her and decide once and for all where her true loyalties lie… and whom she is ultimately willing to fight for.

I am seriously loving this series. Although this is only book 2, it packs a punch! Whenever there was any interaction between Celaena and Chaol I was on the edge of my seat. When Celaena was in “assassin” mode, I was on the edge of my seat. When something got discovered and I didn’t see it coming – you got it.. I was on the edge of my seat. You can pretty much just say there was no point in me “sitting” for any part of it. 😀

Oh, and I’ll give you a little tip now.. make sure you read this when noone is around. I found myself mumbling (out loud) when I read certain parts and cursing at particular characters whenever they said or did something I disagreed with. I’m sure I’m not the only one with this problem, right? 😜

Before I go any further, incase I didn’t mention it clearly in my Throne of Glass review, usually when people read the book, they usually find themselves deciding who they preferred – Chaol or Dorian..? Well, I chose Chaol (keep this little tidbit in mind when you read on).

So, back to my review…

I so badly wanted to see what new developments were going to show up between Celaena and Chaol in this book. And when it finally happened..during Chaol’s birthday I was giddy and happy that they finally expressed how they felt to one another…

And boy oh boy did they ever haha! It turned from admitting they care for each other, to kissing to full on..uhhh not kissing *wink wink, get my drift?* and lots of it! All in a short amount of time too and call me immature but I could not stop laughing at how quickly they turned into horny teenagers (oh wait they are lol)

So this stage I was feeling super happy and light-hearted, then.. BAMMMM!!

Uh oh, game over! Cut to the chase: horrible things happen; Chaol feels guilty and Celaena turns into Death herself. Here anger was practically coming off of the page as I was reading it. I could feel the rage! (Here’s where my little tip from earlier comes in handy again). All I know is even I was shaking my head at Chaol, poor guy. But I was glad that she was able to turn to Dorian during the uneventful time (and not in a hooking up kind of way), they sort of became friends again. When she ended her relationship with Dorian in the first book, I was relieved coz I wanted her with Chaol but I never wanted her to distance herself from Dorian or be cold towards him (which I think she was for most of this book). I always thought he was a nice guy, but I had always just preferred Chaol. So when they kind of stuck together to get through the troubles they were dealing with, I just sat there and thought: Yes! Finally..they’re friends again – I missed the times when they just hanged out and talked. It always had a different..umm feel? or atmosphere? to it then whenever she was with Chaol. Does that make sense? (Sorry if it’s just a whole heap of babble).

I’m really looking forward to reading more about Dorian too. This book gives you a little more insight to Dorian and his life, so I can’t wait to see how it all goes down in the next books for him.

But besides the whole romance bit, I love the fact that this book; this series has a bit of everything. It’s action packed. I love it whenever Celaena kicks ass! The way Sarah J Maas describes how Celaena, gets into the zone, packs her weapons and goes in armed and ready to kill anything in here way always makes me feel like I’m watching some sports game and my team is kicking butt! It also has a bit of mystery so you’re always guessing and questioning what’s going to happen next. It’s a fantasy fiction that lives up to the hype. I’ll leave it at that!

RATING: ♥♥♥♥/5

I’m really loving this series so yes I am recommending it to you, just like it was recommended to me! It’s definitely a hyped up book series for a reason. Trust me, don’t give this one a miss! 😉

  1. I feel you on being a crazed person when reading this book (any book really). My cafe most likely thinks I’m crazy with the amount I mumble, laugh, or god forbid cry while reading. I pity the person that can see my facials because I’m sure there just as crazy haha.
I loved your description of the fight scene where her and Chaol fall apart the anger lept off the page. I always get so excited when Celaena starts to braid her hair, I just sit back and get prepared for some ass whooping! Great review as always!

    1. Oh you know what, I hadn’t connected the hair braiding to the ass whooping til I read Heir of Fire *slaps forehead* lol But I tell you what, I’m with you..everytime it happens I always end up thinking…Oh here it’s about to go down! 😀 Lol

I read this one whilst on the train..big mistake. The strangers nearby either looked at me funny, intrigued by what I was reading or couldn’t stop smiling at me..I can’t help thinking what facial expressions I had at the time haha
